I Shall Be Released
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say ev'rything can be replaced,
Yet ev'ry distance is not near.
So I remember ev'ry face
Of ev'ry man who put me here.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say ev'ry man needs protection,
They say ev'ry man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he's not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.

Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Overall Meaning

The song "I Shall Be Released" by U2 is a cover of a Bob Dylan classic. In this song, the band portrays the message of rising above hardships and the feeling of imprisonment. The lyrics—"They say everything can be replaced, yet every distance is not near"—suggest that everything can be changed in life, but there are some aspects that still remain far away. The lines "So I remember every face of every man who put me here" indicate the feeling of being trapped or imprisoned and not being able to forget the people who are responsible for putting one in this position.

As the song progresses, the tone changes to a more hopeful one. The lines—"I see my light come shining from the west unto the east, any day now, any day now, I shall be released"—suggest the belief that freedom from the oppression will come. The second verse—"They say every man needs protection, they say every man must fall, yet I swear I see my reflection some place so high above this wall"—indicates the importance of protecting oneself while also rising above the barriers that society puts in place.

The third verse is about someone standing next to the singer who is wrongfully accused and framed. The singer feels a connection with the man and sees his release as being tied to his own. The final chorus contains the same message of hope and anticipation for release. Overall, the lyrics of "I Shall Be Released" convey a message of hope, resilience and the human spirit's ability to overcome hardships and imprisonment.

Edge was playing in a style of The Joshua Tree recordings that were taking place at the time, ahead of that album's March 1987 release.
