Whiskey in the Jar
U2 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was goin' over the Cork and Kerry mountains
I saw Captain Farrell and his money he was countin'
I first produced my pistol and then produced my rapier
I said stand and deliver or the devil he may take ya

Musha ring dum a doo dum a da
Whack for my daddy-o
Whack for my daddy-o
There's whiskey in the jar-o

I took all of his money and it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she'd love me, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman for you know she treat me easy

Being drunk and weary I went to Molly's chamber
Takin' my money with me and I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels

Now some men like the fishin' and some men like the fowlin'
And some men like ta hear a cannon ball a roarin'

Me I like sleepin' specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison, here I am with a ball and chain yeah

Overall Meaning

U2's rendition of the traditional Irish folk song Whiskey in the Jar tells the story of a man traveling through the Cork and Kerry mountains who comes across Captain Farrell counting his money. The singer then draws his pistol and sword and threatens the captain to stand and deliver. This leads to the man taking all of the captain's money and bringing it home to Molly, who he has given his heart to.

However, Molly ends up betraying him, and the man finds himself in jail with a ball and chain. The lyrics are reflective of the typical themes present in Irish folk music of love, betrayal, and loss. The use of colloquial Irish expressions like "Musha ring dum a doo dum a da" and "Whack for my daddy-o" further display the song's authenticity and Irish roots.

Interestingly, Whiskey in the Jar has gone through many iterations and variations throughout the years. It is believed to have originated in the 17th century and has been played by numerous artists ever since, including Thin Lizzy, Metallica, and Grateful Dead, among others. It has become a staple tune in traditional Irish music and is often performed at Irish weddings, pubs, and festivals.
