Brothers, Madison (drums) and Spenser (bass) Leeds with vocalist/lyricist/guitarist Cris Villa made up the band for the year having a great time and playing several local shows in the L.A. area.
In September of 2010, after building a solid repertoire of hardcore lyrics and sounds, the trio decided to bring aboard guitarist Lea Arzola, adding a fuller sound and of course their only female member.
The four school mates/band mates started experimenting with a deeper subject matter, discussing religion, spirituality, politics, and how we are influenced and many times oppressed by today's culture. Sophia's Hanging was developing a theme...a specific sound and...a specific look.
In 2011, Arial Alvarez was invited to join the band on keys and bring effects and synth to the band. Powerful bass drops, synth wailing in the background and a special effects vibe now completed the sound Sophia's Hanging was pushing for.
In August 2011, adversity struck the band and Cris Villa (now of Armless Ambidextrian) and Sophia's Hanging were forced to part ways. After working with another vocalist for a short time it was realized that the band needed to take time out and really find someone that would bring the group together to grow musically and artistically. Even in Los Angeles this would be no easy feat. Being one of the younger bands on the circuit it was hard to find a good vocalist in the same head space with the same passion, time and dedication to making music.
Sophia's Hanging had the hardcore sound they wanted, a amazing practice studio, trailer, tons of merch, devoted fans...but were struggling to find those vocals.
November 2011 brought an inquiry to a Craigslist ad posted by Joti Arzola for a hardcore vocalist. When she first screened the video her jaw dropped. She sent the video to Lea to preview thinking "maybe I don't know what I am hearing"?
The person in that video, Jeff Renfro, was brought into the studio for a practice session and HOLY SHIT shit...as soon as he opened his mouth four other jaws dropped at the same time. Sophia's Hanging had come full circle.
