Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been lookin' for someone
Between the fire and the flame
We're all lookin' for something
To ease the pain

Now who can you turn to
When it's all black and white
And the winners are losers
You see it every night

I need somebody
Somebody like you
Everybody needs somebody
I need somebody
Hey what about you
Everybody needs somebody, oh

When you're out on the front line
And you're watchin' them fall
It doesn't take long to realize
It ain't worth fightin' for, oh

I thought I saw the Madonna
When you walked in the room
Well your eyes were like diamonds
And they cut right through, oh they cut right through

I need somebody
Somebody like you
Everybody needs somebody, oh yeah
I need somebody
Hey what about you
We all need somebody, hey

Another night, another lesson learned
It's the distance keeps us sane
But when the silence leads to sorrow
We do it all again, all again yeah

I need somebody
Somebody like you
Everybody needs somebody, oh yeah
I need somebody
Oh what about you
Everybody needs somebody

I need somebody
Somebody like you
Everybody needs somebody
Need somebody
I need somebody
Yeah what about you baby
We all need somebody
I need somebody
Everybody needs somebody

I need somebody (hey)
Everybody needs somebody

Overall Meaning

Bryan Adams’ song, Somebody, is about the search for love in the midst of life’s uncertainties and hardships. The song begins with a search for someone to ease the pain we all experience at some point in our lives. It speaks to the universal truth that everyone needs somebody to love, to care for and to lean on when times are tough.

The second verse talks about the futility of fighting when life feels like a battlefield. It is a powerful message that suggests that sometimes it is better to let things go than to fight for something that isn’t worth it. The chorus emphasizes the need to find that somebody, that special someone who can be there for you during the good times and the bad.

The final verse speaks to the cyclical nature of love and life. We learn from our past experiences, but we can't help but repeat them – because in the end, we all need somebody. The song ends by repeating that message of hope and connection between people, and the need to have somebody to rely on.

gotye ignoring what she's saying and just saying "you didn't have to cut me off" is such a beautiful detail. He hears her but he is so caught up in his own pain that he doesn't look her direction until she starts to go away and him knowing her starts to fade away. He looks in her direction, she's still there but he doesn't know her anymore, she's different, she's distant. Somebody that he used to know. She still exists in his space but it's not who he knew.

I used to enjoy this song. Something Terrible happened last year and she cut me off. I never heard from her again, the song started to hurt a lot when i paid attention to the lyrics.

It's the eerie feeling that they as are still alive but you're strangers, a person who you used to share every single thing in your life, and all of a sudden you don't even know them anymore.

I can't describe how much the lyrics resonate. "You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness" and the pain even tho he says "but I'll admit they I'm glad it was over".

I'm sorry for anyone going through that ❤ it'll all be good in the end, it'll all work out
