Auld Lang Syne
[traditional] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
cnd never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot?
cnd auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
We too have run about the hills
cnd picked the daisies fine
But we've wandered many a weary foot
Since auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne
There's a hand my trusted friend
cnd give me a hand of thine
cnd we'll take a rack of bitter draught
For auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For auld lang syne
The lyrics to "Auld Lang Syne" evoke a sense of nostalgia and reflection on past friendships and experiences. The phrase "auld lang syne" itself is often translated as "old long since" or "days gone by," suggesting a longing to remember and cherish old times. The first stanza poses the question of whether old acquaintances should be forgotten and never recalled, to which the answer is implied to be in the negative. It emphasizes the importance of remembering and honoring the people and memories of the past.
In the second stanza, the phrase "For auld lang syne, my dear" is repeated, emphasizing the sentiment that these memories are shared with someone dear to the singer. It suggests that even though time has passed and they may have gone through different experiences, they will still raise a cup of kindness for each other's sake. This line captures the essence of the entire song, emphasizing the significance of old friendships and the desire to maintain those connections.
The third stanza reflects on the shared experiences of the past, specifically running about in the hills and picking flowers. It acknowledges that they have also endured many challenges and hardships along the way. Through the line "Since auld lang syne," the singer acknowledges the passage of time and the changes that have occurred since their shared experiences, but the sentiment of remembering remains steadfast.
The final stanza brings the focus back to the present moment. It suggests reaching out to a trusted friend and symbolizes connection and unity through the act of holding hands. The mention of a "rack of bitter draught" signifies tasting the bitter experiences and challenges of life together. However, regardless of the hardships faced, the line "For auld lang syne" reaffirms the commitment to sharing a cup of kindness, highlighting the enduring nature of friendship and the importance of celebrating shared memories.
Overall, "Auld Lang Syne" is a song that captures the sentiment of remembrance and cherishing old friendships and experiences. It encourages us to reflect on the past, honor the connections we have made, and celebrate the enduring bonds that exist despite the passing of time.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And the days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne
And surely you will buy your cup
And surely I'll buy mine!
We'll take a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne
We two have paddled in the stream
From morning sun till night
The seas between us Lord and swell
Since the days of auld lang syne
For old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot
For the sake of auld lang syne?
For old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind
Should old acquaintance be forgot
In the days of auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll drink a cup of kindness yet
For the sake of auld lang syne

My grandmother passed away last December. She was not Scotish herself, but her granddaughter (me) was born in Scotland and she had held an affinity with it ever since. She wanted Scotish music for her service, but due to the service-providers we couldn't. Her ashes will be scattered tomorrow, at the place where she was most happy. I won't be able to be there, but I suggested to my family to play a nice version of Auld Lang Syne. My dad asked me if I could find a nice and appropriate version. This rendition made me cry. It is gorgeous. Thank you for making me feel I could be part of her send off.
