All Star
► Smash mouth Lyrics

Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead

Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now, wait till you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture
The ice we skate is getting pretty thin
The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
My world's on fire, how about yours?
That's the way I like it and I never get bored

Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
All that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show, on get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars

Somebody once asked could I spare some change for gas?
I need to get myself away from this place
I said yep what a concept
I could use a little fuel myself
And we could all use a little change

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do, so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets?
You'll never know if you don't go (go!)
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold

Overall Meaning

Smash Mouth's song All Star is an upbeat and optimistic tune that talks about self-discovery and seeking opportunities in life. The song begins with the line "Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me," indicating that the singer is a bit naive and can be taken advantage of. Furthermore, the line "I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed" enforces this idea. The initial verses describe limited opportunities in life and feeling stuck in a place that is not fun or exciting, leading to the singer's need to get away from their current situation.

However, the chorus changes the overall tone of the song, becoming more positive and uplifting. "Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play" is encouraging the listener to find value within themselves and find something to excel at in life. This line is followed by "Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid," which further reinforces the message to find success and prosper, and that nothing is stopping you but yourself. The final lines, "Only shooting stars break the mold," describe that individuals who dare to be unique and different can break free from societal expectations and find success.

Overall, Smash Mouth's All Star is a feel-good anthem that encourages listeners to break free from their limitations and find success in their own unique way.

I took a walk around the world
To ease my troubled mind
I left my body lying somewhere
In the sands of time
But I watched the world float
To the dark side of the moon

I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah

I watched the world float
To the dark side of the moon
After all I knew it had to be
Something to do with you
I really don’t mind what happens now and then
As long as you’ll be my friend at the end

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I’m alive and well, will you be
There a-holding my hand
I’ll keep you by my side
With my superhuman might
Kryptonite

You called me strong, you called me weak,
But still your secrets I will keep
You took for granted all the times
I never let you down
You stumbled in and bumped your head,
If not for me then you'd be dead
I picked you up and put you back on solid ground

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I’m alive and well,
Will you be there a-holding my hand
I’ll keep you by my side
With my superhuman might
Kryptonite

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I’m alive and well, will you be there
Holding my hand
I’ll keep you by my side
With my superhuman might
Kryptonite
Yeah!!

If I go crazy then will you still
Call me Superman
If I'm alive and well,
Will you be there a-holding my hand
I'll keep you by my side
With my superhuman might
Kryptonite

Oh, whoa, whoa
Oh, whoa, whoa
Oh, whoa, whoa

Serious question: Why did this music just go away? Alternative rock from the 90s to around mid 2000s was amazing, and it just seemingly died overnight. People would still listen to music like this now.

@jgg204

I don't know, it's a shame. Seems the shift started beginning in 2010......this type of music just started evaporating

@jhoviillee

Great question. Every generation creating their own taste I guess. I agree. I grew up on heavy metal and alternative rock. They're like no other. I even just recently discovered Ramstein and The Hu, and I am over the moon! I have a feeling this genre will come back right around the bend. Hopefully sooner than later.

@ridwanap6166

Im still loving this kind of music, but most people now dont

@Haltzo

@@jhoviillee This genre will never die, im just waiting for some new great band to pop up 😄

@charlesmonroe7151

i did not go away, they just dont promote it anymore. If you look you can find plenty of bands like this i guess. But it is the nostalgia i think that makes you stuck with this songs.

This was a special song between my dad and me. He died last year Sept. 2. The day before his funeral, I drove to the cemetery to see exactly where the service would be the next day. (It’s a large military cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.) As I drove in, this song came on the radio, and it felt like him finding a way to reach out to me. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him.

@blackheart456

I thank him for his Service 🙏.
I'm so sorry.

God knows

@confusedwoman610

Sorry for your loss
