Boys Don't Cry
● The Cure Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would say I'm sorry
If I thought that it would change your mind
But I know that this time
I have said too much
Been too unkind

I tried to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I tried to laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'Cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

I would break down at your feet
And beg forgiveness, plead with you
But I know that it's too late
And now there's nothing I can do

So I try to laugh about it
Cover it all up with lies
I try to laugh about it
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'Cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

I would tell you that I loved you
If I thought that you would stay
But I know that it's no use
And you've already gone away

Misjudged your limits
Pushed you too far
Took you for granted
Thought that you needed me more, more, more

Now I would do 'most anything
To get you back by my side
But I just keep on laughing
Hiding the tears in my eyes
'Cause boys don't cry
Boys don't cry

Boys don't cry

Overall Meaning

The "Boys Don't Cry" song by The Cure is a heartfelt song that portrays the sorrow and regret felt by a man who has gone too far with a past lover. The lyrics of the song reveal how he wishes he could take back everything he did wrong and apologize for hurting her. The verse begins with an apology in which the singer expresses his regret and how much he wishes he could take back all his words and actions. Despite knowing that it's too late, he still can't help but try to hide his true emotions since, as the title implies, boys don't cry. The singer expresses how he would try and cover up what he's feeling with false laughter and lies, all while trying to appear okay, even though he knew his heart was shattered.

In the chorus, he reiterates the concept that boys don't cry and how he wishes he could change everything and make it right between him and his lover. He then goes on to admit that he would undoubtedly break down and plead for forgiveness if he thought it would change anything. The final verse shows him realizing his mistakes and misjudgments, taking his significant other for granted, and pushing her away. He admits that he thought she required him more than he required her and now he would do anything to have her back in his life, but the only thing he can do is laugh while hiding his tears since boys don't cry.

[Verse 1]
Two jumps in a week, I bet you
Think that's pretty clever, don't you, boy
Flying on your motorcycle
Watching all the ground beneath you drop
You'd kill yourself for recognition
Kill yourself to never, ever stop
You broke another mirror
You're turning into something you are not

[Chorus]
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry

[Verse 2]
Drying up in conversation
You will be the one who cannot talk
All your insides fall to pieces
You just sit there wishing you could still make love
They're the ones who'll hate you
When you think you've got the world all sussed out
They're the ones who'll spit at you
You will be the one screaming out

[Chorus]
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
Oh, it's the best thing that you've ever had
The best thing that you've ever, ever had
It's the best thing that you've ever had
The best thing you've had has gone away

[Chorus]
So don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me high
Don't leave me dry
