Dog Days Are Over
♪ Florence And The Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Happiness, hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with a drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming so you better run

Run fast for your mother run fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can't you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had
And what was left after that too, oh

Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back
Struck from a great height
By someone who should know better than that

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

Run fast for your mother and fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your loving behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses
'Cause here they come

The dog days are over
The dog days are done

The horses are coming
So you better run

Overall Meaning

The song "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence and the Machine is an upbeat indie pop song about breaking free from personal struggles and embracing change. The lyrics are figurative and metaphorical, describing happiness as a powerful force that hit the singer like a train on a track. The heroine hides from it initially but eventually defeats it and runs forward to escape what she left behind. The song references the end of the dog days of summer, a period when heat and drought make life difficult, and the arrival of the cooler autumn season. The approaching horses in the song are a metaphor for the new beginnings that the singer is celebrating.

The lyrics of the verse describe the singer's complex relationship with happiness. She tries to avoid it, hiding around corners and under beds, but it comes towards her like a train on a track, representing her inability to escape it. The line "she killed it with kisses and from it she fled" refers to her fleeting embrace of love, which she quickly flees from. She tries to forget her worries by "sinking," represented by bubbles and drinks, but eventually loses all hope and washes her problems "down the kitchen sink." The refrain "the dog days are over" signifies that the singer is leaving behind a difficult period and embracing the beginning of new possibilities.

The chorus of the song encourages listeners to run towards new beginnings and free themselves from their troubles. Florence and the Machine pleads with the listener to leave behind their "love and longing" in the past, as they run "fast for your mother, run fast for your father, run for your children for your sisters and brothers." The chorus, therefore, encourages listeners to embrace change while leaving behind past experiences and memories that hold them back.

Florence recently said: "For me 'Dog Days' symbolizes apocalyptic euphoria, Chaotic freedom and running really really fast with your eyes closed." amazing. <3

@thespacementv1506

And guardians of the galaxy revealed what the song truly means: The Marvel of Freedom.

Why am I 13 years late to all of the masterpieces she produced

@andynufc1992

I remember listening to the original video for the first time when it only just had 3.000 views!!!!,I listened to it for about a week non stop and I'm glad to see how popular her music now is as she's an absolutely fantastic artist, despite me liking all of her other songs this is still my favourite one by a long way,it's nice to see that in Florence and Adele that there is still some proper musical talent that is appreciated for what it is.

@lotuscat3173

@@nicolasleiva6636no, you're wrong its for everyone facing hardship, to tell them there is a light at the end of the tunel
And even the inspiration for the name makes it so its for us as in everyone and is this one: "It's a reference to the dog star, Sirius. When it was closest to the Earth, all the animals would get languid and sleepy. When it moved away, they'd wake up."
Stop gatekeeping happines just because you sthink your struggles are or were more important, they matter but mines do to and as i said earlier everyone's struggles matter

EDIT: source is literally look it up anywhere and no im not trying to be mean im tired of hate and feeling like crap
