The End of the Line
♫The Offspring [1998 - Americana] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the siren's flash is gone
And we're left to carry on
All the memories are too few

When the pastor's music plays
And that casket rolls away
I could live again if you
Just stay alive for me

Please stay now, you left me here alone - it's the end of the line
Please stay I can't make it on my own - it's the end of the line
Make it on my own
It's the end of the line

Now that you are dead and gone
And I'm left to carry on
I could never smile cause you
Won't stay alive for me

Finally,
Your final resting day
Is without me
I weep
And think of brighter days
What about me?

You can't take back, the one mistake
That still lives on after life it takes

In that one day, that changed our lives
And bitter memories are left behind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "The End Of The Line" by The Offspring describe the aftermath of losing someone you love. The song is about a person who is heartbroken after the death of someone close to them. The lyrics talk about how memories of the person are all they have left and how they wish that person was still alive to share their life with. It's a powerful message about how love and loss can affect the human spirit.

The lyrics evoke a sense of pain and loneliness, reminding the listener of the fact that life can be fleeting, and that we should cherish our loved ones while we have them. The singer pleads for his loved one to stay alive for him, indicating that without them, life would be meaningless.

The song is a ballad, with a melancholic melody, matching the sorrowful lyrics. It's a powerful and moving tribute to loss, and a testament to the human spirit's resilience in the face of it. The Offspring is one of the most beloved pop punk bands of all time, and this song is one of their most memorable and touching moments.

Yeah I think most of us fell through the cracks.
School just wants to to graduate, they don’t care as much if you cheat or not on tests. They just want to get themselves a good score so they can get more money.
Teachers are crushed by the amount of work, student behavior, educational board requirements, im sure there’s more.
Parents just want to see you succeed. But they won’t tell you how to. Or teach you how to bc that’s the “schools job”

I think there is a fundamental disconnect between parents, school boards and teachers.

I think it’s safe to say that Americans schools are useless when it comes to getting kids, teens and young adults ready for the “real world”

It’s no wonder people fail hard after high school or college.

@Not-a-Cockroach

When we were young, the future was so bright
Woah-oh
The old neighborhood was so alive
Woah-oh
And every kid on the whole damn street
Woah-oh
Was gonna make it big and not be beat
Now the neighborhood's cracked and torn
Woah-oh
The kids are grown up, but their lives are worn
Woah-oh
How can one little street swallow so many lives?
Chances thrown
Nothing's free
Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives
Shattered dreams (go!)
Jamie had a chance, well, she really did
Woah-oh
Instead she dropped out and had a couple of kids
Woah-oh
Mark still lives at home 'cause he's got no job
Woah-oh
He just plays guitar and smokes a lot of pot
Jay commited suicide
Woah-oh
Brandon OD'd and died
Woah-oh
What the hell is going on?
The cruelest dream, reality
Chances thrown
Nothing's free
Longing for, used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives
Shattered dreams (Go!)
Chances thrown
Nothing's free
Longing for (what), used to be
Still it's hard, hard to see
Fragile lives
Shattered dreams

22 years later and the kids STILL aren't alright. In fact, I think they got worse

@clacclackerson3678

I was a teacher then and I'm a teacher now. In many ways kids are kids are kids, but in some interesting and scary ways today's kids are so different that they could be regarded as a different species. And no, they are definitely NOT alright. Their parents are the kids in this film clip.

@gummyf4ngs

we, in fact, are very very much not ok

@simonkyro661

Some things get better, some things get worse

@z0901

I agree...

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.” - credited to Socrates. . .

kids are kids and always have been - its the adults that raise them that aren't alright.

When I was 15 years old this song sounded nice.
Now I'm 39 years old and it hits on a whole other level.
