Seiko used to hold the record for the most number 1 singles by a female singer until March 2006 when Ayumi Hamasaki's Startin' / Born To Be... reached number 1, making it her 26th single to top the charts. Nevertheless Seiko still holds the record of the most consecutive No.1 singles for a female artist, a record that she has been holding for two decades and not likely to be broken anytime soon (Ayumi has 23 consecutive number 1 singles as of July 2010).
Seiko is also on the Top 3 list of Most No.1 albums, Most Top 10 singles and Most Top 10 albums. Widely recognised as one of the most influential artists in J-pop history, HMV Japan ranked her No. 10 Top Japanese Artist of All Time, and No. 7 Top Singer of All Time. Her unusual staying power gives her the title of 'Forever Idol'.
Nobody in Japanese history (including royalty, politicians and sports stars) got more news coverage than Seiko. Controversial news about her personal life, as well as her resilient ability to bounce back from any scandals or set-backs, garnered extensive media attention.
She attempted to break into the North American market with an English-language, self-titled album in 1990. She scored a hit with "The Right Combination", a duet with boy band New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg. Album sales were mediocre, however, and her follow-up Was it the Future failed to generate any significant sales.
Sony will be releasing a deluxe box set for Seiko in July 2006 that will set another record. This box set will contain 55 CDs, 860 songs costs 100,000 yen and has a play time of over 80 hours. It is definitely a tribute to Seiko's amazing music career.
Seiko still holds annual concerts, Christmas dinner shows and New Year's Eve Countdown shows. Despite of the high ticket price (her dinner show tickets are the most expensive among female artists), she always performs to a sold out crowd.
Married to actor Masaki Kanda from 1985 to 1997, she has a daughter, herself a singer, who performs under the name SAYAKA.
In addition to music, her career includes appearances in television, film, commercials, and radio. Two books of photos of Matsuda, and two books about her, have been published.
Bless You

例えば 君を忘れたなら
この目は 何も 意味を持たない
だから 側にいて
つまずいた夜に 泣いてくれた事
今も忘れない
日々の戦場の中 汚れないでいてね
いつも 君を想う I bless you.
Wonderin' snow
睫毛に積もる粉雪 そっと
君という光に 溶かされていく
それは 眩しくて
瞬きの間 またひとつ生まれる
想い君へと
月に乗せて今 その窓に届け
今夜 君を唄う I bless you.
I'll be missing you tonight...
新しい季節がやがて巡り来る
街を包んで
時が流れても いつか眠る日も
ずっと 君を想う I bless you.
I'll be missing you
The lyrics to "Bless You" by Seiko Matsuda speak about the deep emotions and longing for someone special. The song is divided into three distinct parts, each expressing different aspects of love and connection.
The first paragraph, "Wonderin' night," talks about the significance of the presence of the person being addressed. It emphasizes that even if the singer were to forget this person, their eyes would lose their meaning. The lyrics express the desire for the person to stay by their side, especially during difficult moments when they stumble and cry. The singer reflects on how they will never forget those times and requests the other person to remain unblemished amidst the battles of daily life.
In the second paragraph, "Wonderin' snow," the imagery shifts to snowfall. The lyrics compare the delicate and pure snowflakes gently piling up on one's eyelashes to the melting effect this person's presence has on the singer's heart. The light emitted by the person is described as dazzling and transcendent. It is suggested that every blink is an opportunity for new feelings to be born, all directed towards this special individual. The singer hopes to send these thoughts and feelings on the moon's back, hoping they will reach the person through their window, expressing love and blessings.
The line, "I'll be missing you tonight," serves as a bridge between the second and third paragraphs. It conveys a sense of longing and longing for the person being addressed. A new season is mentioned, signifying the passing of time, yet the singer knows that even as time flows and they eventually fall asleep, they will always think of this person. The lyrics emphasize the enduring nature of their love and the constant blessings sent their way.
The final line, "I'll be missing you," reiterates the emotional and profound connection between the singer and this person. It expresses sincere longing and highlights that even in their absence, the singer will continue to think of them. This line adds a layer of melancholy and intensifies the emotional impact of the song.
Overall, "Bless You" is a heartfelt and emotional declaration of love, longing, and devotion. It beautifully captures the depth of connections between individuals and the enduring impact someone special can have on our lives.
