Don't You
Simple Minds Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ooh, woah
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving everything inside and out and
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby
Don't you, forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you, forget about me
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down
Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah
Don't you try and pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security, ah
Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby
Don't you, forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you, forget about me
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away
Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you call my name?
I say
La, la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
When you walk on by
And you call my name
When you walk on by
The lyrics to Simple Minds' hit song Don't You are largely about the fear of abandonment in a romantic relationship. The song starts off with the singer asking for attention from his love interest, hoping they will come to see about him as he dances alone. He then appeals to his partner to share their problems and concerns as he is willing to give his everything to help solve any issues. The singer goes on to reflect on the beauty of love and how it can be so real in times of darkness, while urging his partner to remember the good things they have shared together.
The chorus of the song is the most memorable part with the repeated line "Don't you forget about me" which is the singer's desperate plea to his partner to remember him and their love. The lyrics also touch on the pain of rejection or loss by asking whether the partner would recognize him, call his name or simply walk away. The song concludes with the singer confidently stating that he will not harm his partner or touch their defenses, and that he is determined to put their relationship back together.
Interestingly, the song was written by the songwriter Keith Forsey with the intention of it being used in the movie The Breakfast Club, but he failed to secure a band to record it. Fortunately, Simple Minds were seeking a more upbeat and catchy song for their new album and were later offered the song. The song went on to become their biggest hit receiving widespread airplay, and it's fascinating to note that the band originally didn't think the song was good enough for an album.
