Carmen
Stromae Lyrics

In "Carmen" by Stromae, the lyrics reflect on the fleeting nature of love and the impact of social media on relationships. The song uses metaphors and wordplay to explore these themes.
The opening lines compare love to Twitter, where one's feelings can change rapidly. Just like how a tweet can be popular for a short duration, love can also fade quickly. The lyrics suggest that at first, we embrace love and follow its path, but eventually, it fractures us and leaves us alone.
The chorus warns to beware of those who like your posts or give plastic smiles, as they are often only seeking personal gain or attention. The line "Vous faites erreurs, vous avez juste la côte" implies that people may mistake popularity or online validation for genuine connection or love.
The repeated line "Prends garde à toi, si tu t'aimes" encourages self-love and self-awareness. The lyrics highlight the importance of being mindful and cautious of one's emotions and actions. The line "Garde à nous, garde à eux, garde à vous, et puis chacun pour soi" suggests that in the age of social media, everyone is primarily focused on themselves and their own interests, leading to a lack of genuine connections.
The lyrics also criticize the consumerist nature of love and relationships. The line "L'amour est enfant de la consommation" suggests that love is born out of a need for constant satisfaction and options. The lyrics question whether people are willing to settle for counterfeit feelings or if they desire genuine emotions that may be harder to find.
Ultimately, the song portrays a cynical view of love, where it is seen as shallow and fleeting due to the influence of social media and the consumerist mindset. The closing line "Un jour tu verras, on s'aimera, mais avant on crèvera tous, comme des rats" expresses a sense of hopelessness, suggesting that genuine love may only be found after one goes through personal hardships or when societal pressures fade away.

For all the English people, in the French chorus, they say:
"Et c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime, s'aime, s'aime"
And that's how we love, love, love
That's how we buy, buy, buy.
But Stromae is so a genius that, in French the "That's how we buy" the "buy" that is "consomme" in French, the last two syllables ("somme") continues to echoes, and "somme" also means "are". So in the original chorus, with the auditory illusion, it sounds like:
So basically, "that's how we are"
Sorry if it's bad written, I'm not the best at English.
