That was the first version I ever heard (Aerosmith’s), and for the longest time it was the only version I knew. Then when I was in high school I heard the Stones’ version, and it wasn’t much longer until I heard this, the original. I love all of them.

Rufus Thomas’ Walking The Dog was his biggest pop smash that spent two weeks at number ten on December 7-14,1963. That song was a hit during its early Stax Records era from 1959-68. Rufus was one of many artists on the label which includes Otis Redding,William Bell,Booker T. and the MGs,Eddie Floyd,Sam and Dave,Carla Thomas and Johnnie Taylor (who recorded his early hits that were written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter before he hooked up with a new producer Don Davis in 1968 during the second part of the Stax era). Rufus was the king of the dance crazes!!!

There are just so many incredible things going on in this recording, and the band and Thomas went from 0 to major hit, cutting the record in not much more than an hour. Just listen to Al Jackson, Jr's groove and how it subtly moves the song forward, Cropper's very spare guitar part and how the horns slightly drag behind the pocket. Now tell me it isn't brilliant.
