More Than This
10000 Maniacs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing
As free as the wind
And hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning

More than this, there is nothing
More than this, tell me one thing
More than this, there is nothing

It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like dream in the night
Who can say where we're going
No care in the world
Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning

More than this, there is nothing

More than this, tell me one thing
More than this, there is nothing

Overall Meaning

The song "More Than This" by 10,000 Maniacs is a beautiful ballad about life and the unknown. The lyrics suggest that sometimes we just don't know what's going to happen, and we need to enjoy moments as they come. The first stanza, "I could feel at the time, there was no way of knowing, fallen leaves in the night, who can say where they're blowing, as free as the wind, and hopefully learning, why the sea on a tide, has no way of turning," suggests that life is unpredictable, just like leaves blown by the wind. The sea's tides also offer an explanation about how life is full of twists and turns, and it's impossible to know what's coming next.

In the second stanza, the lyrics, "It was fun for a while, there was no way of knowing, like a dream in the night, who can say where we're going, no care in the world, maybe I'm learning, why the sea on the tide, has no way of turning," the singer reflects on a period in her life that was enjoyable, but she didn't really know where it was heading. Maybe she was naive or younger at the time, but she didn't have a care in the world.

Overall, "More Than This" speaks to the uncertainty of life and the need to cherish the present moment. We never know what's going to happen next, so we should appreciate and enjoy the moments we have.

That mesmerizingly beautiful vocalization near the end is a vital part of this song forever. Even when I listen to the original song I feel it is missing it.
