Because the Night
10000 Maniacs Lyrics

Hold me close, try and understand
Desire is hunger is the fire I breathe
Love is a banquet on which we feed
Come on now, try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand, as the sun descends
Can't hurt you now
Can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Have I doubt, baby, when I'm alone
Love is a ring on the telephone
Love is an angel, disguised as lust
Here in our bed 'til the morning comes
Come on now, try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand, as the sun descends
They can't hurt you now
Can't hurt you now
Can't hurt you now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to us
With love we sleep, with doubt the vicious circle turns, and burns
Without you, I cannot live, forgive the yearning burning
I believe in love too real to feel, take me now, take me now, take me now
Because the night belongs to lovers
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers
Saying anybody saving face belongs to her

One of the greatest performances ever. Certainly the best cover out there, she and that band STOLE that song. They made it theirs and I love that.

Natalie Marchant is great, I love her in this band and solo.

Exactly! I just found out it was a cover from a 70s song! They did it best

Natalie Merchant! Chyeah right?!

@Dick Jim,
I kinda like Elvis, but he's a bit overrated.
I think The Beatles are very overrated, but I do give them credit for writing their own stuff.
Dick Jim
@Curly From The Swirly exactly! Prime example is Elvis Presley! Buddy Holly was 10 times a better singer and he wrote all his own songs but he was a nerd. Elvis had the looks and let everyone else do his dirty work. Not saying his voice was bad, but he was all based on looks.

I imagine Natalie and the band didn't even know they were making a masterpiece of a cover, if not in general. I'm sure they were as surprised as the audience and us today when they played it back. Just....surreal. Nostalgia, power, presence, all of it came together masterfully. Also, I quite agree its the strings that make this a one of a kind. Natalie's voice and pitch is perfect for this. One of the best, if not THE BEST UNPLUGGED PERFORMANCE EVER!!!

I think they pulled out all the stops for this performance because it was the last time 10,000 Maniacs would be together as Merchant embarked on her solo career right after this

It rocked harder than anything electrified at that time; blew us all away.
