It's Getting OK Now

When I no longer am
I will take my last breath
And on that day
I'll be dying
At that time will I feel at ease
Will I dream and be at peace
Come on help me now
Why must I think of this until I find
Peace and quiet in the clouding of my mind
There were times I thought I'd never come around
I can tell things are getting ok now
What if there is no ending
And we turn from where we've been
To a place where all we can see is
Light pouring in
Am I really all that far
Far removed from that ending part
Or just a little closer to
The galaxy's misty heart
Why must I think of this until I find
Peace and quiet in the clouding of my mind
There were times I thought I'd never come around
I can tell things are getting ok now
Why must I think of this until I find
Peace and quiet in the clouding of my mind
There were times I thought I'd never come around
I can tell things are getting ok now
In "It's Getting OK Now", 311 frontman Nick Hexum explores the topic of mortality and what comes after death. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as Hexum muses about the inevitability of his own death and wonders what it will feel like to take his last breath. He then poses existential questions about what happens after we die - do we feel at ease or do we simply cease to exist? These are weighty topics, and Hexum is asking for help in finding answers.
As the song progresses, Hexum's musings become more optimistic. He imagines a world where there is no ending and "light is pouring in". He reflects on his place in the universe, wondering if he is just a small speck in the grand scheme of things. Despite not having all the answers, Hexum feels like he's making progress towards acceptance and understanding. He finds peace and quiet in the "clouding" of his mind and realizes that things are "getting ok now".

There will come a time
Inevitably I will reach a point in my life where I will no longer exist
When I no longer am
At that point in time, I will cease to exist
I will take my last breath
My final physical act will be exhaling my last breath
And on that day
During that precise moment in time
I'll be dying
I will be passing away
At that time will I feel at ease
Will I finally find peace and tranquility?
Will I dream and be at peace
Or will I not perceive or experience anything at all?
These are things that no one knows
Such enigmas remain unknowable and indecipherable to humans
Come on help me now
Please aid me in understanding this fresh perspective
Why must I think of this until I find
Why do I continuously ponder on this until I encounter
Peace and quiet in the clouding of my mind
A sense of serenity amid the confusion in my thoughts
There were times I thought I'd never come around
I had doubted my ability to overcome my difficulties
I can tell things are getting ok now
At this juncture, I can perceive that things are commencing to improve
What if there is no ending
Suppose the conclusion does not exist
And we turn from where we've been
We turn away from our current location
To a place where all we can see is
To a location where one can only see
Light pouring in
A steady stream of bright illumination
Am I really all that far
Am I genuinely quite distant
Far removed from that ending part
Vastly separated from that final portion
Or just a little closer to
Perhaps only marginally nearer to
The galaxy's misty heart
The hazy core of the Milky Way galaxy
