It was this single that gave A'me her one-hit wonder status. There were even two videos for the song. After this single's success (which peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #9 on the Billboard Dance Chart), her debut album was released as A'me Lorain & The Family Affair, with the title "Starring In...Standing in a Monkey Sea..." Unfortunately it sold few copies, and failed to chart. This might have been due in part to the fact that the majority of the album sounded nothing like her hit single!
But a second single was released, and, like its predecessor, was produced by Elliot Wolff. "Follow My Heartbeat" was realeased in mid-1990 and peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100. After this single came and went, little has been heard from Ms. Lorain.
She is now rumoured to be working on new material and recording under her given name, Amy Trujillo. She has a website up at www.amytrujillo.com . Unfortunately there's been a "pre-register for the website launch" page up for a few years now, and little else is known as to her whereabouts or her plans to release new music.
Follow My Heartbeat
A'me Lorain Lyrics

Does it matter at all
To anything else
In this whole world
If I manage to scale up
The highest of walls
To stand or to fall
Something in my soul sends me on
It doesn't even know
How hard the way
Something even the darkest
Thoughts can't scare away
[Chorus:]
I've got to follow
My heartbeat, wherever
Even if it bleeds, ooh, ooh, ooh
It's all I know to do
No matter where it leads me to
If I cherish the truth
Or harbor lies
Would the world even care
How I chose it
If I showed my face
Or I wore a disguise
Would the world have
The eyes to know it
Something through the cold
Keeps me warm
Even as the passing storms
Throw rain
Something's always there
No matter what it takes
[Repeat chorus]
Ba da da da...
Just a little dream
Is all I need
Even if it doesn't
Change a thing
Every step I take
Will mean the world to me
And all that I know is this
[Repeat chorus 3x to fade]
The song "Follow My Heartbeat" by A'me Lorain delves on the idea of following one's heart, regardless of what the world thinks. The lyrics suggest that life and death do not matter in the scheme of things, which begs the question of what is truly important. The singer questions whether it matters if she scales the highest walls or stands or falls, as that might not matter, too. However, something in her soul keeps pushing her forward, even when the going gets tough, and the darkness seems never-ending.
The chorus of the song, "I've got to follow my heartbeat, wherever, even if it bleeds," encapsulates the theme of the song. The singer knows that her heart will lead her to the right place, no matter the cost. She values truth over lies, and even if the world does not care, she will stand by her beliefs. Through the storms of life, something keeps her warm, and she finds solace in the fact that she knows what she's doing is right.
In a nutshell, "Follow My Heartbeat" is a song about following your heart, even when the world doesn't make sense. It is about staying true to oneself and doing what is right, regardless of the consequences.
