Overdose
ACDC Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never smoked with no cigarettes
I never drank much booze
But I'm only a man, don't you understand
And a man can sometimes lose
You gave me something I never had
Pulled me down with you
Pulled me up, think I'm in love
Hope you can pull me through

I overdosed on you
I overdosed on you
Crazy but it's true
Ain't nothing I can do
I overdosed on you

Oh woman you give to me
More than I can take
But listen honey, I don't mind
You're a habit I don't want to break
Don't want none of that hard stuff
Don't need it anymore
I'm in love, and I'm sinking fast
And I don't need no cure

I overdosed on you
I overdosed on you
Crazy but it's true
Ain't nothing I can do
I overdosed on you

Gee I was happy as a man could be
To far gone to escape
Power of love, don't pull me off
Just write on my grave

I overdosed on you
I overdosed on you
Crazy but it's true
Ain't nothing I can do
I overdosed on you
On you, on you, on you
All over you
All over you
Overdosed
Overdosed

Overdosed on you
Overdosed on you

Overall Meaning

In "Overdose," ACDC presents the story of a man who fell in love with a woman who became his addiction. This man claims he never smoked or drank to excess, but he couldn't resist this woman's pull. He admits that he's only human and "can sometimes lose," implying that he's not perfect and susceptible to temptation. The woman in question gave him something he had never experienced before, and as a result, he cannot escape her grasp. The chorus proclaims that this man has "overdosed" on this woman, and though he knows it's an unhealthy addiction, he cannot help but give in to it.

The lyrics go on to describe the power this woman has over the man, stating that she gives him more than he can handle. However, despite acknowledging that he has become addicted to her love, he doesn't want to break free from it. The man states that he doesn't need any hard substances because the love he has for this woman is enough. As the song progresses, the man admits that he is happy, but he also knows it's a dangerous feeling because he has become addicted to the woman, and he cannot escape her pull.

One possible interpretation of this song is that it is a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction. The man in the song recognizes that he has become dependent on the woman in question and acknowledges that his addiction is unhealthy. However, he cannot resist her power over him, no matter how much he may wish to break free. Another interpretation is that the song is a celebration of love's intense and addictive nature. The man is happy in his addiction to the woman because he feels that their love is enough to sustain him.
