Richard David James was born to Welsh parents Lorna and Derek James in 1971 in Limerick, Ireland. James spent his childhood in Cornwall, UK. As a teenager, he became a DJ and musician on the local rave scene, taking on the stage name "Aphex Twin". James formed the Rephlex Records label in 1991 with friend Grant Wilson-Claridge and released his first records on this label in addition to Mighty Force and R&S Records of Belgium. After success with his early work, James relocated to London and released several albums and EPs on Warp Records using a number of aliases, including AFX, Polygon Window, and Aphex Twin. Many of his lesser-known limited-edition recordings, under names such as Gak and Power-Pill, are highly prized by collectors. Such recordings also include the AFX releases Analogue Bubblebath 2, Hangable Auto Bulb 1&2, Analord 10 (bindered edition) and releases as soit P-P and Q-chastic.
In 2005, as AFX, James produced the vinyl-only Analord series of over 11 separate 12" singles.
On April 10th, 2006, he released the Chosen Lords album, a personal selection of songs from the highly succesful Analord series by Richard D James, with remastered, re-engineered versions of the originals on CD for the first time.
Quoted in Mixmag 2006 Richard said ” I just love electronics and music and putting the two together just came naturally. I did electronics in college. Electronic music is just so lush basically I love messing with acid, jungle, and playing it out to my mates in a night club. Get out there and dance. Let’s have it! If anyone’s coming to my shows I just want everybody to just dance and have a laugh basically.”

With every new content of AFX that I discover, it is always a unique and original experience for me; there are not that many musicians that can do that.

He is truly creative I'll give you that.

Similar to death grips in that sense. Any recommendations for other artists that try out new styles for every album?

I think the 90s was just an amazing era for music. Aphex Twin, NIN, Massive Attack, Marilyn Manson, Tool and many other great artists. All of them also still release great new stuff except for maybe Manson, and Tool is about to release a new album in 12 years or something.

Richex112 I hear A LOT of Aphex influence in Death Grips discography. Especially Niggas on the Moon, Interview EP and Government Plates. Even Steroids I would say. Not that it’s a bad thing though.

This guy is a genius. Mozart of acid electronica
sexmachine-Stay on the scene
A genius is not just good at music. but overall in many things like painting, math inventing. not just one thing. This guys i defiantly good in what he does extremely good but there many out there doing the job as well. i doubt calling him a genius., he should come with more talents than just one
James Hutchinson
Actually a genius in modern culture has referred to anyone who has excelled in a field above their peers. There exists multiple definitions to the word, including that defined by government run medical institution, referential work such as this, and many other examples. I think you are splitting hairs just to make yourself feel better.

sexmachine-Stay on the scene He is also extremely good at electronic engineering. To be able to design complex synthesizers, and make some of the best music ever written with them, would qualify him as a genius by your definition.
