She first gained recognition at the age of 10, when she appeared on the television show Star Search and performed in concert alongside Gladys Knight. At the age of 12, Aaliyah signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records. She released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number the album sold three million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry.
Aaliyah worked with record producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott for her second album, One in a Million, which sold three million copies in the United States and more than eight million copies worldwide. In 2000, Aaliyah appeared in her first film, Romeo Must Die. She contributed to the film's soundtrack, which spawned the single "Try Again". The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 solely on airplay, making Aaliyah the first artist in Billboard history to achieve this goal. After completing Romeo Must Die, Aaliyah filmed her role in Queen of the Damned, and released, in 2001, her self-titled third and final studio album, which topped the Billboard 200. Unfortunately, the 22 year old singer's life was tragically cut short in a 2001 plane crash after filming her video for "Rock The Boat" in The Bahamas.
Aaliyah became famous in her own right during the mid-1990s with several hit records from the songwriting/production team of Missy Elliott and Timbaland, and their associate Steve "Static" Garrett. Notable for recording several hit singles, including "One in A Million" and "Try Again", Aaliyah has sold over 32 million records total worldwide, including posthumous releases. Two posthumous albums have been released since Haughton's death: I Care 4 U in December 2002, and Ultimate Aaliyah in April 2005, the latter of which was released as a box set that included her greatest hits and a documentary on her life. Haughton also ventured outside of music, modeling for Tommy Hilfiger and starring in two motion pictures (Romeo Must Die & Queen of The Damned) before her untimely death.

We don't laugh no more
We don't play no more
We don't make up no more
We don't kiss no more
We don't hug no more
You don't please me no more
You don't touch no more
We don't go out no more
We don't kick it no more
We don't dance no more
I remember walking through the park
(Walking through the park)
Just shooting the breeze
(Shooting the breeze)
Kissing in the shade (ayy)
Those were the days
Lounging in the den
(Lounging in the den)
You get breakfast in the bed (in bed)
You let me have my way (whoa)
Those were the days
If you don't love me no more
Don't come 'round no more
Just don't call no more
Don't come knockin' up at my door
After ten or so
What you knockin' for?
We don't kick it no more
You ain't cute no more
You ain't fly no more
You ain't got it like that no more
See in you close your door
I still remember you
I remember walking through the park
(Walking through the park)
Just shooting the breeze
(Shooting the breeze)
Kissing in the shade (yeah)
Those were the days (hey)
Lounging in the den
(Lounging in the den)
You get breakfast in the bed (yeah)
You let me have my way
Those were the days
Those were the days (those were the days)
I said those were the days (I said those were the days)
Those were the days (those were the days)
What's up with this, baby?
'Cause you done changed on me (you done changed)
This ain't the way it used to be, baby, ohh
You don't know me no more
You can't lie no more
Ain't gon' try no more
Won't have to say goodbye no more
You gotta hit the door
Hate to see you go
I ain't the one to mess with no flow
Don't take pictures no more
Don't hold hands no more
Yo, I think this is the end of the road
But I still remember you
I remember walking through the park
(Walking through the park)
Just shooting the breeze
(Shooting the breeze)
Kissing in the shade (yeah, yeah)
Those were the days
Lounging in the den
(Lounging in the den)
You get breakfast in the bed (anytime you wanted it)
You let me have my way (yeah, yeah)
Those were the days
Walking through the park
Shooting the breeze
Days
Lounging, lounging in the den, in bed
Days
Those were the days (those were the days)
I said those were the days (I said those were the days)
Those were the days (those were the days)
The lyrics of Aaliyah's "Those Were the Days" portray the end of a relationship. The singer reminisces about the past, where they used to enjoy small moments together such as walking through the park, laughing, lounging in bed, and kissing under the shade. However, things have changed, and they don't do any of these things together anymore. The singer states that they don't "make up, kiss, please, touch, or hug" each other anymore, and that they don't even "go out, kick it, or dance" anymore. The chorus repeats the phrase "those were the days," emphasizing the nostalgia and longing for the past.
The verses then express the singer's frustration towards their ex-partner, saying that if they don't love them anymore, they should not contact them or come knocking on their door. They highlight that their ex is not as cute, fly, or pleasing as they used to be, and that they have changed. The song concludes with the singer accepting that the relationship is over, and that they won't take pictures or hold hands together anymore, but they still remember their ex.
Overall, the song speaks to the complexity of relationships and their endings. It showcases the bittersweet feelings that come with remembering moments of love and intimacy from the past while also acknowledging that things have changed irreversibly.
