Her first album, Abbey Lincoln's Affair, A Story of a Girl in Love was released in 1956. Also that year Lincoln starred in the film The Girl Can't Help It, for which she famously wore a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.
Lincoln sang on the 1960s landmark jazz civil rights recording, We Insist! - Freedom Now Suite in 1960 by jazz musician and Lincolns husband from 1962-1970, Max Roach. Especially since this album, Abbey Lincoln was connected to the political fight against racism in the United States.
She co-starred with Sidney Poitier and Beau Bridges in 1968's For Love of Ivy and received a 1969 Golden Globe nomination for her appearance in the film. She also starred in the 1990 Spike Lee movie Mo' Better Blues.
In 2003, she received the National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters Award.
Lincoln died on August 14, 2010 in Manhattan at the age of 80. Although no official cause of death was given, Lincoln had suffered deteriorating health following open heart surgery in 2007. She passed away in a Manhattan nursing home.
For Heaven's Sake
Abbey Lincoln Lyrics

It's no mistake to call it love
An angel's holding hands with me
How heavenly heaven can be
Here is romance for us to try
Here is a chance we can't deny
While heaven's giving us a break
Don't say a word my darling
Don't break the spell like this
Just hold me tight; we're alone in the night
And heaven is here with a kiss
This pair of eyes can see a star
So paradise can't be so far
Since heaven's what we're dreaming of
For heaven's sake, let's fall in love.
The lyrics of Abbey Lincoln's "For Heaven's Sake" express an overwhelming feeling of love, as well as a reverence toward the divine. The line "For heaven's sake let's fall in love" suggests that this love is something larger than themselves and has a spiritual component. The next line, "It's no mistake to call it love," affirms the intensity and authenticity of their romantic feelings, almost as if it has been preordained by a higher power. The mention of an angel holding hands with the singer reinforces the theme of the divine being present in their relationship, as if they are being blessed by an ethereal being. The chorus is a plea to seize the moment and fall in love while they have the chance, because it has been ordained by fate.
The bridge, "Don't say a word my darling, Don't break the spell like this, Just hold me tight; we're alone in the night, And heaven is here with a kiss" reinforces the theme of the sacredness of their love, and their desire to stay in the moment and cherish it, rather than analyzing or questioning it. The final verse of the song brings the imagery full circle, with the eyes that can see a star and a longing for paradise, which is no longer only in the afterlife but within their grasp as they fall in love. The repetition of the line "For heaven's sake, let's fall in love" reinforces the idea that destiny is at work here, and falling in love is inevitable, but also something incredibly sublime.
