Love of My Life
Acorn Antiques - The Musical Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud

It's my life, it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life) my heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said: I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky, got to make your owns breaks

It's my life, it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life) my heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said: I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

It's my life, it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life) my heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said: I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life) my heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said: I did it my way

I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

Overall Meaning

The song "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi is a declaration of independence and a call to action for those who feel stuck or powerless in their lives. The opening lines make it clear that this is not a song for those who have given up or lost their faith. The singer is determined to make his voice heard and to be more than just another face in the crowd.

The chorus is a rallying cry for anyone who wants to take control of their life and make the most of it. The singer reminds us that we only have one life to live and that we should seize every opportunity to make it count. He alludes to the famous Frank Sinatra song "My Way" to emphasize that he is going to live life on his own terms and not be held back by anyone or anything.

In the second verse, the singer pays tribute to the people who have inspired him to stand up and fight for what he believes in. Tommy and Gina represent the underdogs who refuse to back down in the face of adversity. The singer warns that life is not easy and that it takes hard work and determination to succeed. He encourages us to make our own luck and to create our own opportunities.

The final chorus is a reminder to stay strong and not let anyone knock us down. The singer urges us to stand tall and never compromise our principles. The song ends with a reiteration of the main message: we have one life, and we should make the most of it.

Celia Imrie received the Olivier Award for Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her performance in this. She deserved every inch of it. She's spectacular!

@thetricyclehorse

Absolutely. Always. ❤

@TheBeekeeper

I don't understand why she's considered a supporting actress in this. I mean, she has much more stage time than Julie Walters, who's considered the lead. It doesn't make sense to me. Imo, Celia carried this amazing musical.

@davidnarbett

I was blessed to see this twice at the Haymarket - once with Julie Walters as Mrs O and then later with Victoria Wood playing her own creation. The atmosphere in the theatre was electric. I laughed so much I missed some of the details. The DvD (and this post) let me revisit every nuance, and enjoy moments I missed 17 years (17 years??!!!!) ago (feels like yesterday). Victoria Wood’s Mrs O was a different creature to Julie Walters Mrs O, it was like being in a parallel universe, a very special performance.

@cbjones82

I wish I still had the dvd to see the extra with Victoria Wood in the role

@geoffreyblackmer

Why is this so good? Why did it get such terrible reviews? It's an absolute joy!

@tonybrown9775

Truly brilliant. Subverting every musical theatre genre and style from fosse, alw, sondhiem to Cole porter with a dash of le Mis

@markwhitman9542

Very well-put. This cast did justice to the brilliance of Victoria Wood.

@Colin.Smith.Pianist

I cannot get enough of this!!!
I discovered Acorn Antiques in the TV show and subsequently was HOOKED on Victoria Wood. Her shows, her stand up, etc.

This musical lives in my heart and I quote it almost daily; bugger my American friends who don't know what a Macaroon is

@jodif916

I shall be for ever grateful to the comedic genius of Victoria wood. ❤
