Do You Really Want To Hurt Me
Adam Lambert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do you really wanna make me cry?
Precious kisses, words that burn me
Lovers never ask you why
In my heart the fire is burning
Choose my color, find a star
Precious people always tell me
If it's love you want from me
Then take it away
Everything's not what you see
It's over again
Do you really wanna hurt me?
Do you really wanna make me cry?
Precious kisses, words that burn me
Lovers never ask you why
You've been talking but believe me
If it's true you do not know
This boy loves without a reason
I'm prepared to let you go
If it's love you want from me
Then take it away
Everything's not what you see
It's over again
Give me time to realize my crime
Let me love and steal
I have danced inside your eyes
How can I be real?
How can I be real?
How can I be real?
Do you really wanna hurt me?
Do you really wanna make me cry?
Do you really wanna hurt me?
Do you really wanna make me cry?
Do you really wanna hurt me?
Do you really wanna make me cry?
Do you really wanna hurt me?
Do you really wanna make me cry?
The lyrics to Adam Lambert's song "What do you Want From Me?" explore the themes of love, vulnerability, and self-realization. The opening lines, "Do you really wanna hurt me? Do you really wanna make me cry?" express the singer's fear of being emotionally hurt and their desire for honesty in the relationship. They question the motives of their partner and wonder if their intentions are to cause pain.
The lyrics further emphasize the singer's emotional vulnerability as they mention "precious kisses, words that burn me." These words signify that even the slightest actions and words from their lover can deeply affect them. The line "lovers never ask you why" suggests a lack of communication and understanding in the relationship, leaving the singer feeling confused and unacknowledged.
The following verses convey the internal struggle of the singer, as they mention the fire burning in their heart and the pressure to conform to others' expectations. The line "that's a step, a step too far" suggests that the singer may feel overwhelmed or pressured to change themselves for the sake of the relationship.
However, the chorus reflects the ultimate realization and acceptance that if their partner seeks love from them, they are willing to let go because "everything's not what you see." This suggests that the singer has recognized the dynamic of their relationship and realizes that it may not be built on genuine love and understanding.
In the bridge, the singer asks for time to reflect on their mistakes and acknowledges their willingness to love and be loved. They express their desire to be authentic and question how they can be real in the context of the relationship.
Overall, the lyrics of "What do you Want From Me?" portray the struggles and insecurities that can arise within a relationship. The song explores themes of self-discovery, vulnerability, and questioning one's worth and connection to others.

I walked away from my love for her career 10 years ago and this part is so deep af...!!!
@CrimsonHeart3
This is the only one that I'm kinda iffy about only just because there's songs that could have done more justice to your voice, you do justice to every song you sing - the question is whether the songs let you shine enough, and this one doesn't have enough imo
But your arrangement is so unique, loved that - just a covers album is such a one time opportunity and there's so many songs I would have loved to hear with your voice.
I keep thinking of songs like unfaithful by Rihanna, I have nothing by Whitney, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera.
Which also fit the narrative of the album.
Can't wait for live performances though

Adam is brilliant. The arrangements on all these songs are fantastic. It's like enhanced versions of the originals. Adam did such an amazing job with this song!! Can't wait to see him in concert again!! 💕

I totally agree. I loved his re-arrangements of well-known songs on American Idol. And this album is exceptional.

I’m obsessed with this. These covers on High Drama—this one, Ordinary World and I Can’t Stand the Rain—are just unbelievable. Adam absolutely owns these songs. It’s amazing how he can take something already great, work his magic, and make it even better. He’s truly a brilliant talent, with a once in a lifetime voice.
