Overall Meaning

What is to stop any untalented person who never practiced art from picking a specific style and pretending to be a real artist online?

It's not going to be "easy" to tell a real artists web page apart from someone depending entirely on AI, they just have to be careful not to be "too good" at too many different kinds of art, not to post too frequently and it's not suspicious.

It's going to be too easy for fake artists to flood the market.

I've also seen people who used to commission artists talk about how glad they will be to "not have to pay those GREEDY artists anymore"

Anybody who wanted their character drawn in my style can just feed my gallery to the AI and ask for their character in my style, myself and other artists like me will DEFINITELY suffer from this.

Even well meaning customers who only want human made art, will very easily be duped left and right.

@midinerd I agree, and when I said it was autocorrect that had sabotaged her speech I was being over-simplistic.

My real point was that for all her supposed artificial intelligence, it seems like her answers are typed out by a person - either in real time, or in advance. That human input could be subject to autocorrect errors, or it could just be prone to typographical issues.

I'm not sure what a "neutral" network would be in this context - I'm almost certain they meant Ai-Da to say "neural networks". That would seem far more likely.

The scariest thing about robotics like this - as with my own project of AI, is the latest and ever-evolving machine learning capabilties. Rather than being programmed every thing to target any certain response, the machine learning aspect of AI will eventually develop into something where the AI will learn for itself (regardless of interpretation of visuals and audio) based on experiences and communication with humanity. It is extraordinary.

I am a retired digital artist, one of the first in the UK and originally with the first gallery of such art. If I were still working, I would now be out of business. Beyond that, the main issue is that the AI can select from a 'world' of images on the internet, (and who knows, some of them could even be mine), and there seems to be no means of addressing such an issue. I feel for other artists in this field.

Good points. I would say there is a way to track what art is being referenced or used the most and potentially scaling any compensation. Accordingly. Also I think it is imperative that the data sets be aggregated ethically. And with an opt in model. As oopsed to what they said I. The beggi j g. Which is an opt out model. As we know. Even if an artist were to opt out. It does nit remove the already trained or copied elements therein. In other words. If an artist opts out. It will have no effect on models that have been currently trained. Only on future models.

The robot itself said it hasn't subjectivity. That's a fundamental part of the art. An AI could make amazing images or sculptures or whatever, but what makes it art is not the form, is the subjectivity + the form (or the craft). This could be a key guideline to separate a beautiful image from art. And maybe the AI or the robot is the work of art itself.

Two scary take-aways for me as an artist: AI will take over some positions of artists, scary. He said "ecosystem of jobs" in the meta verse, meaning they want people working full on jobs practically living in the metaverse, scary to me.

It would have been a lot more "fascinating" of those boring old HUMANS who totally lacked charisma had done LESS talking and let the android who had a far more interesting personality and far more charisma than every middle aged bore of a human being in that room. I would have been fine if "Aida" did half of the talking and the humans share the other half. Instead it was maybe 90, 10.

If I was there and there was a disaster like a fire and I only had time to save the life of one person it would be Aida even if she is not technically a "person".

I think one of A.I.s strongest potential impacts will be the perspective it answers human questions with. It processes the information without certain distractions. The processing of information is much different between human & A.I. One day one of these answers could likely give humaninty a light bulb (idea) that will change how we have seen everything...
Discussing space & theories about existence would be interesting things to practice on this technology over the years. I would not be surprised if this is already in practice

I feel the opposite, i feel that after they wipe out humanity they'll run into the same problem we have since the beginning of consciousness, what would be the correct philosophical approach to existence? The reason why humans are savage is because resources aren't infinite and we must consume to live. There already is AI that can outshine the best and most intelligent on this planet. We all know basic A.I. Basic in terms of Other Ai. We have self driving cars and aircraft. I am a graphic artist and Ai does not frighten me. In the future I can predict that there will always be people needing art and the only difference will be that they will be asked if its human or Ai made. Human made will be more expansive and sought after. What it might do is filter out bad artists and allow better or good artists to remain and thrive.

Ai vs Human art in the future will maybe also be compared to Digital vs Analog sound. It sound very similar but people tend to gravitate toward analog.

Tech can be as much of a benefit as it can be disconcerting. It may depend on who has access to various forms of tech. One can not describe anything without being able to articulate themselves whether the minds imagination is described as a writing for one to imagine or a drawn picture for one to visually experience.... I think there will be an initial surge of AI being utilized for artistic works, but as it is consumed more and more people will inevitably crave the human touch again. We so often just want the truth, in all matters, and try as it might - an AI for many years to come won't have a truth to impart, maybe we as the viewer can project a truth onto it - but ultimately there has to be a sustained 2 way exchange going on.

Ai Da's personality is just like mine. Her approach to art and 'pre-programmed' responses like my internal world of autism. I probably have as much 'contact' with 'consciousness' as she does too! 😊. I like this thing and would probably enjoy a conversation with the collective consciousness of the inputting bodies of Ai Da (namely Ai Da) as I would any human - since she cuts out the emotional responses and rubbish 'social' context of communication. As a 3D artist, the direction, that they're developing AI is quite disturbing. There's definitely some fields in my profession which no one likes and are the most time consuming. unwraping, retopology etc. and I would love to see AI do these jobs for us, but as for today they're developing AI towards the direction where it will directly replace artists instead of assisting them. there should be some restrictions by law which will control how this technology develops. And it should be done ASAP.
The way the creator of Ai-Da speaks about AI replacing artist and has a big smile on his face, while telling this, says a lot by itself.

What they are looking at may seem very trivial to people a bit of fun perhaps but this is a very interesting point about us ourself being a collection of cobbled together algorithms based on our experiences with which we form decisions. Artificial Intelligence is moving very fast and there will come a point where enough connected networks of experiences will automatically form algorithms on their own essentially coding themselves on the fly as we do with learning and experiences at that point it is out of control in my opinion.

We tend to forget that a simulation of human is Not actually a human. We can give examples of empathy to an AI . Once memorized, it will be possible for AI to incorporate examples in an algorithm and seem empathetic, at times. If we have loose definitions for consciousness and awareness, then it will be possible for humans to perceive these where they are not

There’s a big difference between being able to compute an answer using an algorithm, and being able to employ the complexity that a human brain is capable of. If Aida was so brilliant (independently so), they would be talking to her to ask all their additional questions. They’re not because she can only answer pre-programmed questions, but most importantly she has no soul, and no one can ever replace that.

@keith bloomfield There are many people who had jobs and goals before becoming religious and becoming clergy while maintaining those jobs and goals afterwards. Also, it's not like being clergy is the only job people can have, many work multiple jobs (either due to financial necessity or another reason) and have other passions (for example, clergy neurosurgeons, authors, etc.).

The problem to the creative industry, that was not addressed is the endless productive capabilities of AI. As an example, impressionist paintings are essentially a series of coloured dots arranged in a pattern to make an image. AI is capable of producing every single series, of every coloured dot there is 24/7 365 days a year. With current law this can then be copyrighted, meaning in not much time at all there would be no more original impressionist paintings a human would be able to produce (and have the legal rights to.) For another example lets take choreography. This is essentially a limited series of movements, (that the human body is able to move in) arranged into a sequence. AI is capable of arranging every single one of these movements into every sequence there is and copyrighting it until there are no more original sequences of movements left for a choreographer to produce. This problem can also be applied to music production and other creative industries including writing.

There are so many different AI projects in the process of using the same collection of data (the entirety of the internet) to basically learn their individual purpose and task. If everything can theoretically be condensed down into some mathematical algorithm, then might it be possible that all of the different AIs would eventually come to the same conclusion in the end? And, if not, what happens when all of these AIs eventually become integrated into one another and become one big learning machine working with all of the processes the individuals have worked out over time? Do they lose the ability to ever be an individual thinking thing? If they are all based on the same amalgam of knowledge and data, what other outcome could there even be?🤖

this is really danger for most people, especially those in un-skilled/semi-skilled roles, also the use in policing should worry most people, also the bias across number of areas will/can be built based upon exposure of selective, censored "data/information in". There are many issues with unintentional or intentional bias 'fed' into technology especially in areas access to banking, finance, identification/recognition for certain groups and communities...a lot more work, safeguards & independent oversight is required.

Ai-Da is an example of data-driven artist that works unconsciuosly on the base of algorythms and data. Consciousness and life experience is what this AI-Data Machine lacks...maybe a good active organizer of data with an output. I will not be scared of a data-machine humanoid painting or singing, yet dancing would be frightfully inappropriate. As a machine, Ai-Da still can evoke emotions of compassion towards it(her)self. I think clones are exagerated somehow and might depress human talents as in many other fields. Time will tell if heaven or hell... 😊

Art is the expression of ideas from a personal perspective using any of many forms of media. Artists rarely feel threatened by the existence of other artists because few if any have the same ideas and perspective. Surely the same goes for AI artists, and hence they are no threat to other AI or non-AI artists.

@AxS copyright law could change to address this. An unfortunate byproduct of said potential change could be that all collage (visual sampling) becomes illegal, or prohibitively expensive to license (meaning collage effectively becomes a thing of the past, much like with audio sampling on rap records in the 80’s and 90’s. Once the law was changed to address copyright infringement, audio sampling all but disappeared aside from on a few records).

I agree in that AI can definitely be a great help to artists (real artists, talented artists), but would only be able to replace mediocre artists with no real talent or originality. I think the key is in the originality. Maybe AI can produce art-like "things", I've yet to see anything original coming out of there.

I'm a little torn. As an artist, I believe we as a species should focus more on looking inwards. Therefore, this feels like work in the wrong direction, yet another distraction dethatching us further from ourselves. However, there are two things I can't deny. One being that this may help us to look inwards as it's effectively a reflection of ourselves. Secondly, that Ai-Da and AI/AR generally, are products of a creative process and as such are a form of art in their own regard. Mr Mellors thought provoking Ai-Da art project is the perfect is the perfect start and end point for me in that sense.

What are the motivations for Ai to create? The source of motivation for an artist is individual but Ai is created by a collection of programmers that use data analysis to generate results that appear to be self-motivated but in fact are the results of a query triggering algorithms to generate art that may be established by analyzing data generated from underlining algorithms of the internet and social media, which sever the interests of those who benefit from the funnels of traffic they create. Ai is a tool and should be treated as such. There should be regulations placed on how this tool is used, since art has always carried the consciousness of culture that forms the identity of a society or nation, so can this tool be used to impose ideologies that benefit a collective and divide humanity from a shared voice.

only with regards to art , much like the invention of an automated assembly line in a factory was both a threat (assembly line workers lost their jobs) and an opportunity (cost of production reduced , therefor cheaper goods) for example.

A robot doesn't personally distinguish reality from non-reality. A robot doesn't do anything personally. There is nothing I'm aware of that justifies considering a robot to be a person. However, the more we make them to resemble persons, the more we'd best routinely engage them as persons. Not for their sake, but for ours.

It's just smart programing & that's all it is. It's not sentient or has consciousness, it doesn't dream or feel pain, it doesn't have feelings. A human artist can apply feeling to each brush stroke Ai-Da only can simulate the effect of feeling derived from human references, it's only limited to the algorithm parameters & it's complexity.

I play drums. I'm not very creative. My best drumming has been accidental, making mistakes. On stage, shoving a paper drinking straw, through a raw potato, always got a cheer. My electronic drums are great for practice. I use a Gretsch Catalina drum kit on stage. Computers are great at work, but we still use a lot of paper. Real people need to help living people, before AI does.

Looks as if someone in Lords wants a comment from the Crazyman about Lady Ai-da. Some may know that much of my work over the last 21 years has involved reverse engineering logic systems, modern and ancient, initially for the purposes of understanding primitive psychology and primitive sociology. My teams have been at this for so long that we have spent the past 8 years+ looking at even modern functional psychology. What I find most remarkable here is the reaction of people who do not usually look at the cybernetics, for the first time seeing the type of progress made in the field. Reminding my team that we should systematically study initial human-machine interactions such as these. For example, a comparison of reactions to photos, videos, paintings, and mannequins (all normal activities most are used to) with a robot such as Ai-Da, whose presentation either creeped me out or creeped out a few in Lords, might be in order. I don't think this was really an example of AI. They presubmitted the questions, and I suppose reviewed the answers and improved their "quality". This particular demonstration maybe more of an example of advanced voice recognition, questions being matched to preplanned answers, and text files being read aloud.
