baby blue
Aimee Mann Lyrics

Kept you waiting there too long my love
All that time without a word
Didn't know you'd think that I'd forget
I'd regret
[Chorus:]
The special love I had for you
All those days became so long
Did you really think I'd do you wrong
Dixie, when I let you go
Thought you'd realize that I would know
I would show
[Chorus]
What can I do?
What can I say?
Except I want you by my side
How can I show you?
Show me a way
Don't you know the times I've tried
Guess that's all I have to say
Except the feeling just grows stronger every day
Just one thing before I go
Take good care baby, and let me know
Let it grow
The special love you had for me
My Dixie dear
In Aimee Mann's song Baby Blue, the singer expresses regret for not being able to acknowledge the special love they once had for someone who they address as "baby blue." The lyrics convey the guilt the singer feels for taking too long to return to their love, almost as if they don't deserve for them to still care. The opening lines "Guess I got what I deserved/ Kept you waiting there too long my love" illustrate the feeling of wrongdoing that plagues the singer's mind.
The chorus emphasizes the love shared between the singer and their love-interest with the lyrics "The special love I had for you/ My baby blue." The contrast between the regretful tone of the rest of the song and the chorus amplifies the depth of feeling the singer has towards their lover. The following lines, "All those days became so long/ Did you really think I'd do you wrong/ Dixie, when I let you go/ Thought you'd realize that I would know/ I would show," show that the singer feels as though their love never truly believed in them, as if they believed that the singer would purposely hurt them.
The ending lines "Guess that's all I have to say/ Except the feeling just grows stronger every day/ Just one thing before I go/ Take good care baby, and let me know/ Let it grow" speak of the singer's desire to remain in touch with their love-interest and that their feelings haven't lessened over time. In conclusion, Aimee Mann's Baby Blue is a ballad that communicates the feeling of remorse and regret felt by someone who wishes to return to a lover they once had.

As an old fan of this song ... one of the best pop tunes ever written ... was thoroughly blown away by her version of this when I saw her live in Manchester in '93. A fitting tribute to the genius of Pete Ham.

You saw her? Lucky dog
MICHICUM NO NATTYS IN 82 YEARS
Yes....killer tune!!!
Badfinger (Pete Ham) beat Lennon/McCartney at their own game....ridiculous easily!!

Omg. I was just reading Aimee's Wikipedia page because I already related to her work and admired her.. and then, amongst a ton of other new reasons that she's a badass, I found out she covered my second favorite Badfinger song that I've been meaning to cover myself. Aaaaagh! So much awesome. I'm too excited.

Really incredible version. The original is still the best!

True, but she totally does it justice, as I would expect.

Dunno bout that. This is pretty edgy and intense.

Covers really don't get any better than this. I can hear the Badfinger influence in her "I'm with Stupid" album, and I think this was recorded around that time.
