The band consists of a trio of high school and university friends: Cory Adrian (shredding guitar/vocals), Matt Simmonds (keyboard champion/bass/vocals), and Graham Drummond (lead drums).

The band released its debut EP The Industry in July 2009 and has subsequently played numerous shows throughout Southern Ontario. The singles Industry and Screwdriver have received airplay on several college radio stations throughout the region.

Maybe his badge was next to his holstered weapon, and the weapon is ALL that attendant calculated and stopped any more thinking.

Pilot and crew responded exactly as they should. Some commenters either don't get it or didn't watch the video. FAMs keep their badges in a badge wallet, not on a belt clip located next to their gun, so that theory is out the window. As indicated by the pilot, his first officer is FSDO and knows that brandishing a firearm as identification is not SOP. Further, the FAM reportedly became agitated with the flight attendant for calling the cockpit. Even with confirmation that two FAMs were indeed onboard, this is still suspicious and erratic behavior. The pilot has to consider the safety of those onboard and on the ground. This was absolutely the right call.

@Boat Lover well, im ignorant of typical protocols inwhich you just mentioned. but the story seems very off from get go. can a passenger demand to a flight attendant to see the passenger manifest ? i doubt it. so, it begs the question...why would the FAM act in such a unorthodox way ?
we may never know.
heck, it could be that the fella actually did use correct protocol via identifying himself, and maybe even showing his badge and federal ID....then proceeded to be a bit too demanding by asking for the manifest. the flight attendant got a bit annoyed/offended, coupled with being pro gun control, and then the drama is off to the races so to speak.
no flight recordings of the conversations. no eye/ear witnesses saying anything, etc.
would be interested in hearing his side of the story tho, b/c of being so odd, so off.

@Gizziiusa As I said before, I don't think he acted properly assuming the flight crews narrative is true to fact. I flew more than 100 times armed while working for another federal agency. You fill out paperwork at the counter, fill out another form going through an alternative security line and depending on the airline you give a copy of your paperwork to the FA for him/her upon boarding with a copy for the flight deck, and many airlines also ask you to visit the cockpit with the pilots copy. The airline is also supposed to provide each armed person on board with a list of other armed individuals on board and their seat locations. If the FA did not know who he was already, somebody really screwed up. Again, this does not excuse his alleged behavior in any way.

Just found this video, read the related news stories. Here is my two cents worth. Any law enforcement officer, whether your local beat cop, sheriff deputy, state police or federal officer from any agency derives their authority from their badge, not from their gun. Any LEO who is confused by the source of their authority should not be in that role. Your badge is the symbol of your authority, your gun is the tool by which you can exercise or abuse that authority.

Quick correction: the First Officer is an FFDO (not FSDO)--Federal Flight Deck Officer, which is a commercial pilot trained as a federal law enforcement officer under the TSA. They're armed pilots and are akin to Air Marshals, with their jurisdiction being the aircraft itself.

A former brother police officer I worked with left and became a FAM. He thought it would be exciting to be an Air Marshall carrying Federal credentials. It didn’t take long for him to learn that a FAM is the most boring uneventful job out of all the Federal Govt. law enforcement agencies. Plus, the pilot is technically the FAM's superior. They don't view it that way, but the captain is considered head of the executive power on board. He has the final say in security matters. All the FA did was tell the chief on board that "his" guard was acting strange. Absolutely the right call, especially as it was unclear if there even WERE marshalls on the flight (i.e. the man could be an imposter).

retrained for bulk fuel in the USMC :) I heard the lowest passing scores go to a job called bulk fuel. I think I remember reading something like failing the ASVAB test means the DoD does not believe a person's intellect allows them to be trainable for any job. I wish all the bottom feeders in the federal employee system can be transferred to bulk fuel where they can at least serve some purpose (dragging heavy hoses) or GTFO.

Now go look at the news reports on this. That gives you just a glimpse of how completely unreliable news reporters are. Some even start out talking about the attendant "freaking out because she saw a gun", then further down reveal they actually have the entire story, but still they decided to frame it this way. Smart pilot, all that he says over the radio is cemented in the record, no twisting the official record later or certainly making it harder. Also if your ever in a situation like this, make one written statement, take a photo of it with your cell phone and when asked to repeat what happened only refer to the first written statement, no deviation or they pounce.

Great coordination between pilot, controllers and emergency services. Get the plane on the ground and in a secure place, then sort out the mess. Just because a guy is an air marshal doesn't mean he hasn't gone off the deep end. First priority is to keep everyone safe. Listen to these guys - so calm and professional and keeping each other informed. Just another "yawn" day at the office.

I can have an ATM open, and they think they can approach me and show their badges and everything is OK. WRONG! Interesting. I knew a FAM and he was fired for pointing his duty weapon at a man and his elderly father at a Newark airport. He was arrested and fired later. He joined a DC govt sub agency and was fired from there as well for having an illegal assault weapon. He was reinstated and was fired again for falsifying paperwork. Cruddy agency but a more cruddy person. He was someone who had police tattooed on his butt because no one would believe he was every smart enough to earn a badge. I am sure other FAMs may know who I am speaking of.

The flight crew acted correctly. Even if the Marshall ID'd himself correctly with the badge. Them not being notified that marshals were on board is an issue that needed to be reported to the Captain & passed on to their OPs at the very least. Showing of the gun is forbidden PERIOD, except if they have to pull it on a suspect. I think the Marshals got on the flight to capture a suspect getting on at a mid route stop and they didn't show (or couldn't ID him/her) and the guy was upset over that. but very unprofessional either way and to be honest considering how minor things get regular passengers slapped with the Federal Crime of disturbing an aircraft these guys should of as well.

@Ahmed Batun Ride alongs are not notified ahead of time. those are there for airplane security in case something happens. If they are there for ANY other official reason, especially if armed. they do have to notify the captain.

To be clear. The marshals don't tell the captain. TSA security will do that when the marshall comes through security When they ID themselves and state their reasons. That said each airline has their own set of procedures on this.

The flight attendant shouldn't have called the flight deck to report him displaying his weapon? What kind of training did that guy have? In such a situation, informing the flight deck is standard procedure and the attendant has NO discretion. Informing the flight deck is mandatory. Had he displayed his badge, the attendant would have discretion. Displaying a deadly weapon removes that discretion.

He should have shown her his badge so she could relay the badge number to the flight deck for them to confirm. Once they have confirmed that this is an on duty FAM in the performance of his duty, they can give him access to the manifest. The fact that he displayed his firearm before he displayed his badge is a direct violation of Standard Operating Procedure and is grounds to declare an emergency. The flight attendant did absolutely NOTHING wrong here. Had she not informed the flight deck of this person displaying his firearm, she would have been derelict in her duty. That is a termination offense.

Security on planes is of the utmost importance. I’ve been a cabin cleaner for a few years now and u have to have a certain type of clearance to get a SIDA badge and then there’s another clearance just to be able to board the plane to clean it. The FAMs are supposed alert the cockpit crew who in turn alert the FAs. He knew better. And then to get angry at the FA just for doing her job? She felt as though the passengers and crew were in danger the way he handled it. She did not only the right thing to ensure everyone’s safety but it exposes to the FAA who they have boarding their aircraft. Hats off to the whole crew and ATC for handling this effectively and professionally. It goes to show that sometimes those irritating delays aren’t always just to piss the customers off.

The flight attendant did the right thing, upon being confronted by an armed individual on a passenger flight, the flight attended informed the pilots that an individual with a gun was on-board was making demands and revealing the gun (this could easily be interpreted as an implied threat of violence against the flight attendant and/or other crew/passengers). The pilots responded appropriately by securing the cockpit and informing authorities on the ground, keeping the cockpit secure until authorities on the ground could confirm the incident had been resolved. The behaviour of the Air Marshal seemed to be ignorant of the responsibilities of the other parties involved with air security procedures.
I suspect this Air Marshal needs to be retrained to instill an awareness of the roles and responsibilities of flight attendants and pilots in air security, to avoid initiating a chain of events similar to the one depicted in this video, in which the actions of the Air Marshal cause the crew of this airliner to respond using their established procedures for dealing with a possible hostile threat to the plane and those aboard it.

The Air Marshal should probably also be informed that showing a gun to people going about their usual business in their place of work is, inherently, an extremely threatening action and should be avoided in other locations as well, such as while returning items at a department store, or demanding more whipped cream on a fancy coffee at the coffee shop.

Based on this individual's apparent indignation at being treated as a threat by the air crew, I'm not certain the Air Marshal is already aware of this.

The Airport made a statement that "Typically, the flight attendants would have that information [that an air marshal was on board]", and the TSA made a statement that "Protocols for notification of law enforcement presence aboard an aircraft are in place to avoid an incident like this. TSA is working with the airline to determine the specific circumstances in this case."

My speculation is that the airline should have informed the flight crew ahead of time about air marshals being on board, but either that didn't happen or that information got lost somehow.

‘We didn’t know we had FAMs on board’, don’t they have to make the flight crew aware of the presence and don’t the flight crew seat the Air Marshal? So for 2 to be on board and to flash a gun not a badge? I’d have called ATC too

Honestly... the guy asked to see the manifest and showed a gun in his holster. If those clues weren't enough, it's quite a simple matter to ask for the badge. What's the other explanation? A crazy man is playing 'air marshal', and can somehow get a gun through security, but doesn't know that air marshals have a badge?

Back in 2002 I was accepted to FAM training(down in AZ IIRC at that time) after having interviewed out in NJ of all places and was set to go when they pulled the guaranteed "home" assignment(home airport). The remaining options were NOT an option to me so I passed. I've been in several three letter agencies since and was prior military SOF as well. I still know a couple of the guys I've met through the years and can say with a fairly high level of confidence that the guy flashing his "ack ack" will be soon looking for a job in a small town where the only "gun" he'll be flashing to unsuspecting civies will be his radar gun while eating boxes of Good-n-Plenty from his speed trap. Yeah...he's D-O-N-E. No question...

MSP is actually a nice place to visit. There are so many pianos to play! There's an excellent Kawai in the baggage claim, a street piano at the Nicollette tram stop, and a Schubert museium in town at which one can actually play a bunch of pianos and organs, some of which have actually been played by Listz and Brahms themselves!

The FBI called the incident miscommunication. The above video stated it was not SOP to show a weapon instead of a badge. I've seen nothing to suggest the Air Marshall is suspended .

Awesome work by the whole crew on the plane and the airport team. It was the right call to land, when a self proclaimed FAM shows a gun, even after the situation started to clear up. Better to be safe then sorry. Better calm and polite (which both Airport and Cockpit crew were - neither wanted a fuzz about anything, both teams just did their part to get the plane safe on the ground and from there let the authorities resolve it) in case of an emergency, then escalating.

Air Marshals are meant to operate anonymously: a) it allows them to discreetly observe passengers and crew, and b) It doesn't make them a target if there is a criminal or terrorist on the flight. Brandishing your weapon only serves to undermine the Air Marshal's job and cause confusion amongst uninformed members of the flight crew and passengers who would naturally be concerned about anyone having a firearm on a plane. I hope this Air Marshal received a needed performance review and re-training for his brash decision to show-off his gun instead of his ID & Badge.

You have to be a FEDERAL LAW enforcement officer (LEO) as you said and know that only Federal LEO'S may carry weapons on board. I am an FAA trained and certified Airline Ground Security Coordinator. I am contacted if an armed FEDERAL LEO is booked on a flight. I am required to check credentials and introduce him to the pilot in command and the head flight attendant. So many protocols were broken and ignored by a FEDERAL LEO who knows the rules and regulations but chose to ignore them.
Honestly, it's scary and possibly a very dangerous situation. He is done in any type law enforcement occupation and could very well be sentenced to jail time in addition to being terminated. He may also be ordered by a FEDERAL judge to undergo a psychological examination based on his actions.

The flight crew took appropriate action for the situation. I would hope my flight crew would do the same given the circumstances presented to them.
I'm disappointed that I can't find any defence of the crew however.

Well, I don't know the whole story, but it COULD BE that air marshals did not 'show' guns deliberately, rather flight attendant got frightened when he\she saw it. Perhaps, ID tag was on a belt, near the gun. Normally, a gun attracts view more than even a shiny badge. Maybe the gun was hidden under the shoulder, and while the AM was picking his inner pocket to pop the badge, the gun showed up. In that case, it takes seconds for a flight attendant to report gun holder on board and a week for gun holder to explain oneself.

After telling him no, she said the passenger responded by saying, "didn't they tell you me and my partner (redacted) were on board?

I know the FAM is supposed to be shrouded in secrecy. The idea is that someone is sitting in a random seat, armed with a gun just in case a terrorist or group of terrorists attempts to seize the plane. I always assumed the pilots knew they were on board the planes, but they don't know where they are seated so they can't give up their location if they are being threatened by the terrorists. I think the TSA and Federal Air Marshals started out with the best intention but over the past 18 years they've gained reputations as bullies.

It is reasonable that FAM might be onboard without the crew being aware of their presence. But in this case, FAM would not break their secrecy by asking a flight attendant for the manifest. FAM would have this from their own sources prior to boarding the flight, if they were looking for a specific party. Yes? And if FAM needed to make their presence known, quietly, to a flight attendant, surely there would be a procedure to do so, known by both parties, which didn't involve the FAM pulling his d**k out of his pants.

Agree with flight crew, even though I am total "law and order", "police supporter" kinda guy. But I also work for an airline company. You have to consider the FA. All she saw was a gun. That's all. A guy asking for the passenger manifest, with a gun, and claiming to be a Marshall without a badge. I'd have done the same thing. Tell the captain.

So glad someone caught this. Was listening to it live on Monday night and was just so irked when I learned what caused this. Was watching FlightAware for MSP as I usually do when things get quiet at night. It was apparent something major was happening given the number of flights headed to us that were suddenly put in holding patterns north and south of MSP .. something was VERY off. That doesn't even happen when there is a medical emergency headed to us. Then to hear it was a FAM flashing a gun at a FA?!? Nope .. fire him.

Hope the communicating pilot has better luck flying in to MSP from here on out. Sorry to hear we have been a location of too much drama. Really .. MSP is usually boring as hell, I swear! H/T to our excellent staff at MSP .. you are the best, nicest ATC crew I listen to and I am very proud you guys. You always handle emergencies with aplomb and kind professionalism.

It's hard to know when a person who comments on Youtube is right or wrong, (this page in particular has lots of contradictory comments) but at 7:54 the pilot actually says he didn't know he had FAMs on board. That's a crucial piece of information that we can probably believe is true at least some of the time. I was under the impression from a book that I read 30 years ago that FAMs actually met the flight crew before take-off in special secure areas of the terminal so that the flight crew would know from personally seeing them who is carrying the weapons. But now we know that some flight crews do not see the FAMs in advance. That's surprising and interesting. I presume that the events of 9/11 in 2001 precipitated many changes to the FAM process.

FAMs are trained to spot irregularities and because of that they don’t wanna be an irregularity. They are not REQUIRED to inform the flight crew since if they receive special treatment a threat on board could possibly spot that and single them out as a FAM. Same reason they don’t get involved in minor incidents like Drunk and Disorderly since if a accomplice acts drunk to identify any FAMs on board they can find out who is a FAM before their actual plan is carried out.
