I'll Be Home For Christmas

Of a place that I love
Even more than I usually do
And although I know
It's a long road back
I promise you
You can count on me
Please have snow
And mistletoe
And presents under the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
And I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
Please have snow
And mistletoe
And presents under the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
And I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
If only in my dreams
The lyrics to Al Jarreau's classic Christmas song "I'll Be Home For Christmas" communicate a profound sense of longing for home and family during the holiday season. Through the evocative language of dreaming, the singer expresses a deep nostalgia for a specific place that he loves, and admits that although he is far away and the journey home may be long and difficult, he will do everything in his power to make it back in time for Christmas.
The repetition of the phrase "please have snow and mistletoe and presents under the tree" underscores the importance of these traditional symbols in creating an atmosphere of warmth and joy during the holiday season, and further emphasizes the idea of a specific location and a sense of homecoming. Meanwhile, the image of the "love light" gleaming on Christmas Eve suggest the importance of familial love and connection, which the singer yearns to experience despite his physical distance from those he cares about.
