Barrett's Privateers
Alestrom/Alestorm Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, the year was 1778
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
A letter of marque came from the king
To the scummiest vessel I'd ever seen

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
For twenty brave men all fishermen who
would make for him the Antelope's crew

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope sloop was a sickening sight
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She'd a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in scuppers with the staggers and the jags

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the King's birthday we put to sea
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
We were 91 days to Montego Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

On the 96th day we sailed again
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four pounders we made to fight

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Yankee lay low down with gold
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
She was broad and fat and loose in the stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

"Ladies and gentlemen, Mister Heri Joensen"

Then at length we stood two cables away
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Our cracked four pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

The Antelope shook and pitched on her side
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

So here I lay in my 23rd year
HOW I WISH I WAS IN SHERBROOKE NOW!
It's been 6 years since we sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold
We'd fire no guns-shed no tears

Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax pier
The last of Barrett's Privateers

Overall Meaning

"Barrett's Privateers" is a song by the band Alestorm that tells the story of a privateer during the American Revolutionary War named Barrett. The song is set in 1778, and Barrett and his crew are tasked with finding American ships and bringing back their gold to England. However, their ship, the Antelope, is in disrepair and barely seaworthy. Despite this, they set out to sea, and after months of pumping water and battling illnesses, they finally spot an American ship. They engage in a battle, but the Antelope is ultimately destroyed, and Barrett loses both his legs in the process.

The song is a lament for the life and freedom that the privateers once had, and the irony that they are fighting for a government that would hang them if they were caught. It is filled with vivid descriptions of life at sea, detailing the harsh realities that the sailors faced on a daily basis. The repetition of "how I wish I was in Sherbrooke now" is a longing for home and a regret at being caught up in this dangerous and deadly lifestyle.

Overall, "Barrett's Privateers" is a song that celebrates the bravery and tenacity of sailors during a difficult time in history, while also acknowledging the harsh realities of their existence.

AGPMandavel

@Rodney Kennedy late I know, but it's very common in video production to put the wrong segment over the wrong part, so it could very well be that the guy did those harmonics and solo/rhythm stuff live, and the wrong video segment was put over that part. accidentally or purposefully, we don't know. It's also very common in "live show mixing" to post-record a second guitar to fill out the mixed sound. Live, it's likely that they only had the one guy playing and his one guitar, but post recording they beefed it up a little. You could be correct, but it also could be that the video/audio you hear isn't representative of what was done live.

MrSimon1909

why? it sounds pretty bad
