The son of Serbian immigrants, Nenad & Melka Zivojinovich, Lifeson was raised in Toronto, Ontario. Lifeson plays guitar, plays the occasional bass pedals and composes for the rock group Rush. Lifeson's solo album, Victor, was released in 1996.
Outside of music, he owns and operates a small consumer-products design, engineering, and manufacturing firm The Omega Concern, as a gourmet chef is part owner of the Toronto restaurant The Orbit Room, and is a licensed aircraft pilot and motorcycle operator.
Along with his colleagues Geddy Lee and Neil Peart, Lifeson was made an Officer of the Order of Canada on May 9, 1996. The trio were the first rock musicians so honoured.

You know, I just found out about this album today.. shocked that I didn't know about it before. But there is something uniquely Alex about this album, and that's the incredible time signatures and vocals that accompany the guitar. I can't imagine that Alex wasn't truly tired of the keyboard drivel that Geddy was always coming up with in Rush's songs, and that seems apparent here, where his guitar work can stand out once more. I can't think that an artist such as Alex Lifeson, who put out some INCREDIBLE guitar work with Rush, being satisfied with the CRAP that Rush put out in the 90s and beyond. Anyone involved with writing significant progressive rock legends like "Hemispheres" has to know that they've got more to give after an album like that. Most of what I've heard of this record rocks (a little thrashy as it may be), as it should from someone the likes of Alex Lifeson.
