NYC
Alicia Morton Victor Garber Audra McDonald & Andrea McArdle Lyrics

NYC What is it about you You're big You're loud You're tough NYC
I go years without you Then I can't get enough Enough of the cab drivers answering back In the language far from pure
Enough of frankfurters answering back Brother, you know you're in NYC Too busy, too crazy Too hot, too cold, too late I'm sold again on NYC
Come on you slowpokes We gotta get to the Roxy before the prices change
NYC
The shadows at sundown The roofs, that scrape, the sky
NYC
The rich and the rundown The big parade goes by
What other town has the Empire State And a mayor, five foot two No other town in the whole forty eight Can half compare to you
Oh, NYC
You make 'em all postcards
You crowd, you cramp You're still the champ Amen For NYC, NYC The shimmer of Times Square
The pulse, the beat The drive, NYC
The city's bright As a penny arcade It blinks, it tilts, it rings
To think that I've lived here all of my life And never seen these things
Oh, NYC The whole world keeps coming
By bus, by train
You can't explain Their yen for
Star to be NYC Just got here this morning Three bucks, two bags One me, NYC
I give you fair warning Up there in lights I'll be Go ask the Gershwins or Kaufman and Hart The place they love the best Though California pays big for their art
Their fan mail comes addressed to NYC Tomorrow a penthouse That's way up high Tonight the "Y" Why not? It's NYC
NYC
You're standing room only You crowd, you cramp You're still the champ Amen For NY
Keep it quiet down there
Immediate seating, there is immediate seating

Popcorn, what do you say to some popcorn? I haven't had popcorn since
Give in, don't fight Good girl, good night Sleep tight in NYC

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Alicia Morton Victor Garber Audra McDonald & Andrea McArdle's song "NYC" depict the love-hate relationship one has with New York City. The opening line "What is it about you" already sets up the idea that the singer is conflicted about their feelings for the city. They acknowledge that New York is big, loud, and tough, but they still can't get enough of it. The chorus repeats the initial statement highlighting that the city is simply irreplaceable. The lines "Enough of frankfurters answering back/Brother, you know you're in NYC" represent the distinct multiculturism of the city. The city is busy, crazy, hot and cold, thus reinforcing the idea that it's a mixed bag of experiences, but it still manages to charm its inhabitants.

The song goes on to describe specific landmarks and streets of New York that hold significant meaning. The line "The shadows at sundown/The roofs, that scrape, the sky" describes the iconic skyline of the city, while "The rich and the rundown/The big parade goes by" denotes the diverse population of the city. The lyrics also touch on the significance of the Empire State Building, its mayor, and its cultural history. The final lines "Popcorn, what do you say to some popcorn? I haven't had popcorn since/Give in, don't fight/Good girl, good night/Sleep tight in NYC" conclude the song with an invitation to indulge in a guilty pleasure that the city has to offer.

Fantastic! For the curious: Andrea McArdle plays the “Star to Be” who sings the featured verse in this video. McArdle was the ORIGINAL Annie in the Broadway musical, so she was cast in this version (a TV movie made in 1999) as an homage. Without McArdle, “Annie” would not have been a big success. :D

LizaFan

To think we lost Laurie Beechman the year before. No doubt Andrea had her in mind while filming.

James A. Romano

@LizaFan I was thinking the same thing. And she sang NYC at Laurie's memorial service - you can definitely tell what a special moment this is for her

Deadrift89

Andrea is an amazing singer. There is a recording of her singing On My Own from Les Mis that is possibly the best version of that song that I have heard. She's at least as good as Lea Salonga and she can belt it out, really good.

billie227

She also played Eponine!
Sutton Foster also both did those two roles McArdle did. Isn’t that just great?

LNL

@billie227 Sure is. These people are so polished and professional and give us so much joy.

Sam H.

Her voice sounds exactly the same as it did in 1977!

Paul Berthelot

yeah it's actually insane ha ha

Andy Smith

I thought that too. How? Did her voice just never change?

Juliana Rivelli

I was just thinking that too, I feel like they did a vocal dub and put her old vocals from '77 instead of her real voice!
