This Time The Dream's On Me
Alison Krauss & Union Station Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere, someday we'll be close together, wait and see.
Oh, by the way, this time the dream's on me.
You'll take my hand, and you'll look at me adoringly.
But as things stand, this time the dream's on me.
It would be fun to be certain that I'm the one.
To know that I at least supply the shoulder you cry upon.
To see you through, till you're everything you want to be.
It can't be true but, this time the dream's on me.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Alison Krauss & Union Station's "This Time the Dream's on Me" are about a hopeful lover who is eagerly waiting for a time when they will finally be closer to the person they love. The first line of the song, "Somewhere, someday we'll be close together, wait and see," sets the tone for the song's optimistic and dreamy mood. The singer's wishful thinking continues as they imagine holding the hand of the person they love and being looked at with adoration.

The chorus of the song reveals the singer's desire to be the support system for their beloved. The lyrics, "But as things stand, this time the dream's on me... To see you through, till you're everything you want to be," echoes the singer's willingness to be there for the person they love and help them achieve their dreams. However, there is also an undercurrent of doubt in these lyrics, highlighted by the phrase, "it can't be true." This doubt points towards the fact that the singer is still unsure about whether their love will ever come into fruition or not.

Overall, Alison Krauss & Union Station's "This Time the Dream's on Me" is a beautiful and hopeful song that captures the essence of love and longing. The dreamy melody, combined with the heartfelt lyrics, makes this song a perfect addition to any playlist focused on romance and hope.

I really wish that Allison Krauss would do more Jazz & less country!!! She just has such a soulful voice as evident here, the best dam rendition of this Johnny Mercer classic!!! I wish she would do more music just like this :)

@DragonHeart613 You should check out Ella Fitzgerald's version of this ballad if you love Allison's take here! But though Ella's the queen of jazz, Allison does make her run for her money via this recording
