She is classically trained, and has been one of the leading playback singers in Bollywood since the late 1980's. Yagnik began singing bhajans for Calcutta Radio at the age of six. She thought singing as a hobby but later thought about it as a profession. Her first song was for the film Payal Ki Jhankaar (1979), followed by Laawaris (1981) with the hit song Mere Angene Mein, followed by the film Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She got her big break with the song Ek Do Teen from the film Tezaab (1988). The song turned her into a star overnight and went on to become a pop hit. She also received her first Filmfare Best Female Playback Award for the song.
Her voice has mostly been used for the younger generation of stars. She has done the playback singing for some of the biggest stars in the industry. Alka also sings four other languages like Marathi, Bengali and Punjabi.

The song "In The Morning In The Morning" by Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, and Udit Narayan is a lively Bollywood number with a peppy tune and lyrics that are relatable to many college students. The song starts with the singers repeating the phrase "In the morning, by the sea" four times to convey the carefree, leisurely life that they yearn for. The first verse starts with a line "You didn't appear, I couldn't concentrate on my studies" which shows the singer's frustration due to not meeting someone special. The next two lines say "I didn't go to the college even for a day" which shows how his life has come to a halt since he met this person. In the chorus, the singers repeat the same phrase again, highlighting the place that they want to be in to find some peace.
The second verse of the song shows the singer's concern with failing in his exams and its implications. The lines "Passing is worrying, whose life am I going to ruin? / I have to take a test of your love" signify that he is afraid of not being able to get a job and thus, not being able to provide a good life to his loved one. However, the lines "In the morning, by the sea" show that he still wants to take a break from all these concerns and enjoy his present. The third verse highlights how the singer finally found love and how it has made his life beautiful. The lines "Without a job, you are the one I found/ Like a lottery, I got lucky" that convey the singer's joy upon finding the love of his life.

Great work by Nadeem Shravan to bring both Sanu and Udit to sing for the same actor (Ronit Roy) in the same song. Another such song I can remember is from a 2000 film with Ajay Devgan as the hero.
