Emily
Allen Hermann Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Emily, Emily, Emily
Has the murmuring sound of may
All silver bells, coral shells, carousels
And the laughter of children at play

Say Emily, Emily, Emily
And we fade to a marvelous view
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family
They see Emily, Emily

(and we fade to a marvelous view)
Two lovers alone and out of sight
Seeing images in the firelight
As my eyes visualize a family

They see Emily, Emily
Too

Overall Meaning

The song "Emily" is a beautiful tribute to the name of the woman who has a very special place in the singer's heart. The lyrics are very evocative and paint a vivid picture of Emily's essence. The first verse describes Emily as having a "murmuring sound of May". This suggests that Emily is gentle and refreshing just like the month of May. The next line, "All silver bells, coral shells, carousels" uses imagery to evoke the sounds that Emily's name conjures up. The bells and the shells lend Emily an ethereal quality while the reference to carousels signifies joy and playfulness. The last line of this verse encapsulates the musicality of Emily's name as it bounces off the tongue and rings in the air.

The second verse is equally powerful as it creates an imaginary scene of two lovers alone and out of sight, seeing images in the firelight. This forms the perfect setting for the singer's eyes to visualize a family as they see Emily, Emily. This could be a memory or a dream of a future where the two lovers have started a family together. Overall, the song "Emily" is a beautiful reflection of how a name can evoke so many emotions and connotations in our minds.

The kind of Jazz that touch your soul!

Steinar

Fontana recorded this two years before he died - of Alzheimer's disease. Increddible.

Very nice, swinging side! Mr. Hermann plays the way he plays, very cool. Not trying to compete. Obviously influenced by Carl, but who isn't!! Very cool! My respect! I'm surprised I hadn't heard this before, thank you so much for posting. Pure music, and big fun! Everyone in the band had to be laughing and smiling, which is the way it's supposed to be!!

Fred Stanley

Glad to have come across this album , I wish that I had seen it before

That first solo by Carl in "It Might As Well Be Spring" (01:26-2:45) is absolutely ridiculous! The initial doodle-tonguing lead-in sets the pace for the entire solo, which is very musical - NOT just notes. Carl, you are/were THE musical trombone animal!

Chris Amemiya

That is Al Hermann's solo. Carl follows Al on this one.

What's playing for the first 7 minutes??

I'm old fashioned is only 4 minutes long??

Limehouse blues is NEGATIVE 1 minute and 11 seconds!??
