Crying In The Chapel
Allies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The tears I shed were tears of joy
I know the meaning of contentment
Now I am happy with the Lord
Just a plain and simple chapel
Where humble people go to pray
I pray the Lord that I'll grow stronger
I've searched and I've searched
But I couldn't find
No way on earth
To gain peace of mind
Now I'm happy in the chapel
Where people are of one accord (one accord)
We gather in the chapel
Just to sing and praise the Lord
Ev'ry sinner looks for something
That will put his heart at ease
There is only one true answer
He must get down on his knees
Meet your neighbor in the chapel
Join with him in tears of joy
You'll know the meaning of contentment
Then you'll be happy with the Lord
You'll search and you'll search
But you'll never find
No way on earth
To gain peace of mind
Take your troubles to the chapel
Get down on your knees and pray (knees and pray)
Your burdens will be lighter
And you'll surely find the way (and you'll surely find the way)
In Allies's song "Crying In the Chapel", the singer describes finding peace and contentment through prayer in a simple chapel. The tears shed there are unlike any other tears, they are tears of joy. The singer acknowledges that they had been searching for peace of mind but found none until they turned to prayer. Being in the chapel with others who share the same beliefs and faith brings the singer a sense of unity and belonging. The lyrics advise the listener to take their troubles to the chapel, get down on their knees, and pray. It is through this act of submission and surrender that burdens become lighter and one can find the way to true peace and contentment.

Out of all of the covers of Chapel, this was my grandfathers favorite. You might say his opinion counted more than anyone else's. My grandfather was Artie Glenn, the author of Crying in the Chapel.

Master vocalist Bob Carlisle fronted what in my mind was the most talented, versatile, & tightest rock band (not just Christian rock) ..... that was way ahead of the pack in its genre. I have a killer sound system in a "chapel" style log cabin on the side of a mountain in Tennessee...... & I just open the windows and doors, and let the valley below here THIS SONG !!! Bob....man, Bob brought a lead like no one else could..... such passion in a voice.....
