HANDS
Alpine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not hard to understand
That the ringing in my ears
Is not only second hand
But it's for you
I try to find
Explanations for resentment, and purpose of your kind
So don't tell me that I'm wrong
Or you knew me all along
Every list you've ever wrote
Doesn't label you as strong
And I'm sure you've figured out
What the panic's all about
But I'm not interested in how you spent December
If I told you you were right
Would you wake me in the night?
Just to show me how the seconds tick away?
And how the dusk has turned to day?
I think it's time that you should go
Cuz the seats they are all taken, we have filled this entire row
But not for you
You get no time
To settle in this once, or ever in your life
So don't look at me right now
With that venom in your mouth
Or the creeping of a smile
That you know will tear me down
Every word you've ever spoke
Has not possessed a single ounce
Of the honesty you seem to be adverse to
If I told you you were right
Would you wake me in the night?
Just to show me how the seconds tick away?
And how the dusk has turned to day?
I know you mean it
When you mean everything at once
So no more second guesses
I'm never getting back that month you stole
If I told you you were right
Would you wake me in the night?
Just to show me how the moonlight melts away?
And how the dusk has turned to day?
If I told you you were right
Would you keep me up all throughout the night?
Would you cheer along the second hand, and watch it run away?
Or would you promise not to stay?
Please don't stay
Would you promise not to stay?
(I know you mean it)

Please don't stay
(When you mean everything at once)

Overall Meaning

The song "Hands" by Alpine talks about the acceptance of one's emotions, whether they be positive or negative. The lyrics begin by saying "It's okay to feel the rain on my hands" which implies that it's alright to feel sadness or anger. The following line, "My love, my enemy," suggests that emotions can be both loved and hated. The repetition of these lines, along with the haunting melody, creates a sense of acceptance for these feelings.

The following verse, "Spoken out, Fiery heart, Spoken up, Nobody's here," is open to interpretation. It could be interpreted as the singer acknowledging the need to express their emotions, but also feeling alone in doing so. The "fiery heart" could be a metaphor for the passionate emotions they're feeling.

The final verse, "Four-four, Four, Four, Four-four-words, Words, Words, Words-four-words," is unusual and appears to be a nod to the song's structure. The phrase "four-four" refers to the time signature of the song, which is common in pop and rock music. The repeated use of the word "words" in a rhythmic pattern also reinforces the structure of the song.

Overall, "Hands" by Alpine seems to be about embracing emotions, even complex ones that may be simultaneously positive and negative. The use of repetition and unusual phrases creates a unique and haunting atmosphere that reinforces the song's message.

I've been looking for this music video for years. Remember watching it on TV when I was about 11 years old. I could only remember parts of the videoclip and the melody so I couldn't find it 'cause I didn't knew the lyrics. I'm so glad I finally found it. It's so beautiful and special (still practicing my english).

Same here, I’m so happy I discovered it again!

For 4 months I've had this song on repeat and i'm yet to get tired of it. Such a likable melodic track gets better throughout the entire song. Love it!

Their voices sound so electronic together. It's crazy it sounds like someone sampling something and adding effects to it. Not in a bad way though, it makes the most surreal sound.
