Grown-up Christmas List
Amy Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee.
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies.
Well, I'm all grown up now,
But still need help somehow.
I'm not a child but my heart still can dream.

So here's my lifelong wish,
My grown-up Christmas list,
Not for myself, but for a world in need:

No more lives torn apart,
Then wars would never start,
And time would heal all hearts.
And every one would have a friend,
And right would always win,
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list.

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something lovely wrapped beneath the tree.
Well, heaven surely knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal a hurting human soul.

No more lives torn apart,
And wars would never start,
And time would heal all hearts.
And every one would have a friend,
And right would always win,
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list.

What is this illusion called, the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth!

No more lives torn apart,
Then wars would never start,
And time would heal all hearts.
And every one would have a friend,
And right would always win,
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list.
This is my only lifelong wish,

This is my grown-up Christmas list!

Overall Meaning

The song "Grown-Up Christmas List" by Amy Grant speaks about the idea of growing up, but still retaining some of the innocent dreams and hopes from childhood. The singer reflects on writing to Santa as a child and dreaming of receiving presents under the tree, but recognizes that as an adult, there are greater concerns and wishes that extend far beyond the scope of material possessions.

The main theme of the song is the desire for a better world - a world where lives are not torn apart by conflict, wars are never started, and hearts are healed by time. The singer longs for a world where every person has a friend, where righteousness prevails, and where love never ends. Although these ideas may seem lofty and unattainable, the singer believes in the power of hope and the idea that if enough people share the same dream, it can become a reality.

The line "What is this illusion called, the innocence of youth? Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth!" speaks to the idea that sometimes it is only through our idealistic and innocent beliefs that we can truly find the answers to life's most difficult questions. The singer acknowledges that the world is not perfect, but holds onto the hope that it can become a better place - a place where everyone can live with peace and love.
