Christmas
Amy Grant/London Studio Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well, I'm all grown up now
And still need help somehow
I'm not a child but my heart still can dream

So here's my lifelong wish
My grown-up Christmas list
Not for myself, but for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And every one would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list

As children we believed
The grandest sight to see
Was something lovely wrapped beneath our tree
Well, Heaven surely knows
That packages and bows
Can never heal a hurting human soul

No more lives torn apart
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And every one would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list

What is this illusion called, the innocence of youth?
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth

No more lives torn apart
Then wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And every one would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end
This is my grown-up Christmas list
This is my only lifelong wish

This is my grown-up Christmas list

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Amy Grant's "Grown-Up Christmas List" embody the concept of Christmas as a time for hope and goodness. The song is about the transition from childhood to adulthood, and the realization that the world is not always a happy and perfect place. It begins with a nostalgic tone as the singer addresses Santa Claus, recalling childhood memories of sitting on his knee and writing letters with wishes for toys and fun. She then reveals that she is "all grown up now" but still yearns for help to make the world a better place. The singer's Christmas list is not for material things but for a world without war, where love and kindness reign, and every person has a friend.

The song is a poignant reminder of the often-overlooked importance of values such as peace, love, and compassion. It talks about the illusion of the innocence of youth and how only in blind faith can truths be found. It is a call for a world with no feuds or conflicts, where forgiveness prevails and every person can be their true selves. The song decries violence and revenge, touting compassion and the necessity of standing for what is right.

This was so awesome! Michael and Amy are truly two of the best writers and performers in Christian music. I have followed them literally since the beginning. It's not Christmas at my house without Amy's albums. I love their original songs as much as the classic covers. Mariah Carey tried to trademark the title Queen of Christmas. Sorry Mariah...that title belongs to Amy.
