Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing
Amy Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me, ever to adore Thee
May I still Thine goodness prove
While the hope of endless glory
Fills my heart with joy and love

Oh, to Grace, how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let Thy goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee

Never let me wander from Thee
Never leave Thee, God I love
Here's my heart, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Never let me wander from Thee
Never leave Thee, God I love

Here's my heart, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Overall Meaning

Amy Grant's song "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" is a hymn praising God for the various blessings he bestows upon his people. The lyrics speak of the unlimited grace and mercy that God has and the need for Him to guide us through life.

In the first verse, we hear the singer asking God to "tune" her heart "to sing Thy grace." This line means that the singer is asking God to guide her heart towards expressing gratitude for His grace. The second line, "Streams of mercy, never ceasing," has biblical roots in Lamentations 3:22-23, which says, "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness." Finally, the verse ends by urging us to praise God for His unlimited mercy and grace.

In the second verse, the singer asks God to teach her to adore Him and always embrace His goodness. She speaks of the hope of eternal glory that fills her heart, which comes from the belief in eternal life through Christ. The third line again refers to the idea from the first verse of being "constrained" by grace, meaning constantly being influenced by it.

The third verse reiterates the previous verses but adds a plea to never let the singer "wander" or stray from God's path. She asks to be bound to God's goodness and for Him to never leave her. The final line is a request for God to take her heart and seal it for His courts above.
