FIGHT
Amy Grant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know some days I like me, some days I don't
Some days I try with passion, sometimes I won't.
I might just hold my guard up, and lock my heart up tight
But it's the door that's open letting in the light
There's a battle raging inside of me
It's a holy struggle, and it won't let go of me

No, no, no
I don't want to stop the fighting
Wo, wo, wo
I just want to live right

I used to sit and ponder if I'd be fine
If Jesus lived His own life and I lived mine
But love is such a magnet, it pulled me night and day
Until my needy heart just couldn't stay away
Life can drive you crazy or just about
But even when it's most frustrating, this kid's not walking out

No, no, no
I don't want to stop the fighting
Wo, wo, wo
Sure it's tough but I won't deny it
No, no, no
I don't want to waste my life hiding
Wo, wo, wo
I just want to live right

I've made up my mind now, I don't want to lose out
(Unguarded)
Beginning to see now,What the fight is about
(Unguarded heart)
I gotta stay open, keep defenses all down
(Unguarded)
Don't want to be hiding when the love comes round

No, no, no
I don't want to stop the fighting
Wo, wo, wo
I just want to live right

No, no, no
I don't want to stop the fighting
Wo, wo, wo
Sure it's tough but I won't deny it
No, no, no
I don't want to waste my life hiding
Wo, wo, wo

I just want to live right

Overall Meaning

The song "Fight" by Amy Grant is all about the internal struggle that the artist feels within herself on a daily basis as she tries to live a godly life. The song is a reminder of the importance of staying true to oneself and not giving up the battle towards self-improvement even when it gets tough. The artist is aware that some days she feels good about herself, and other days she struggles with feelings of doubt and worthlessness. However, she is determined to keep fighting and live the right way.

The opening lines of the song express Grant's confusion over her own fluctuating self-worth. She acknowledges that she has days where she feels more positive and other days where she doesn't feel good about herself at all. She admits that there are times when she guards her heart and puts up emotional walls to protect herself from hurt. Despite this, she realizes that her heart needs to remain open to allow the light of love in. This is an essential part of her spiritual journey.

The lyrics go on to describe a war that is taking place within her soul. Grant understands that it is an intense struggle, and it is the battle that she must fight to stay true to her faith. The song emphasizes that this war is not one to run from or give up on, but to face head-on. It is a holy struggle, one that won't let go of her. This war is worth the fight, and Grant is prepared to do it no matter what.

The album is super good. Every time I hear "Sharaya" I remember when I was walking away early from the Unguarded concert in 1985 or so on Boston Common because I had to go to work the next day. I was only 20 or 21years old. I had never heard the song and thought it was great. One of my best memories etched into my mind after all these years.

The intro to this song is so dang cool, even after all these years...
