BEAT IT
Amy Winehouse & Charlotte Church Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They told him
"Don't you ever come around here
Don't wanna see your face
You better disappear"
The fire's in their eyes and
Their words are really clear
So beat it, just beat it
You better run, you better do what you can
Don't wanna see no blood
Don't be no macho man
You wanna be tough, better do what you can
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it (Beat it)
Just beat it (Beat it)
Just beat it (Beat it)
Just beat it (Beat it, uh)

They're out to get you
Better leave while you can
Don't wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man
You wanna stay alive, better do what you can
So beat it, just beat it
You have to show them that
You're really not scared
You're playin' with your life
This ain't no truth or dare
They'll kick you, then they'll beat you
Then they'll tell you it's fair
So beat it, but you wanna be bad

Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it beat it
Beat it, beat it, beat it

Beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky and strong is your fight
It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants to be defeated
Showin' how funky and strong is your fight

It doesn't matter who's wrong or right
Just beat it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Beat It" by Amy Winehouse featuring Charlotte Church convey a message of defiance and strength in the face of adversity. The song tells the story of someone who is being warned and threatened by others to stay away and disappear. The singer is advised to run and do whatever they can to avoid getting into trouble. The fire in their eyes and the clarity of their words make it apparent that there will be consequences if they don't comply.

However, the song also encourages the singer to stand up for themselves and fight back. It emphasizes the importance of showing strength and resilience, regardless of who is right or wrong. The lyrics urge the individual to beat it and not give in to fear or intimidation. They need to prove that they are not scared and play with their life as if it's a game of truth or dare. Ultimately, the song conveys a sense of empowerment and the idea that it is better to face challenges head-on rather than succumb to intimidation.

Amy would have been rocked in this song with her voice if she would been sober <3

@Al Grominsky any good singer (and Amy was a great one) would’ve handled that. “The key was too high” is a silly excuse for a singer of Amy’s calibre. It was the drugs/alcohol that messed her up, nothing else. And no, while her own music has her stay mostly in the lower parts of her range, Amy Winehouse was perfectly capable of soaring higher when she wanted to.

Charlotte's and the horn player's faces are priceless when Amy started singing.

"I was kinda aware when Amy came on the show that she was a little troubled and it was difficult. It's so sad what happened to her. She was such an amazing talent. I really wanted to hear the follow up to Back To Black but it wasn't to be. She was great to work with, she wasn't really herself at the time when I worked with her but it was still great to meet her and she is a legend." says Charlotte Church

Poor Charlotte. Her whole 'gimmick' with her talkshow was she sang with the guest & Amy was all over the place in this performance. Both ladies have tremendous voices & had suffered the worst the celebrity world could throw at a performer. If only they'd both been in a position to do a strong collaboration, they'd have smashed it!
