Isn't This A Lovely Day
André Previn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The weather is frightening.
The thunder and lightning
Seem to be having their way.
But as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day.
The turn in the weather
Will keep us together
So I can honestly say,
That as far as I'm concerned, it's a lovely day
And everything's okay.

Isn't this a lovely day to be caught in the rain.
You were going on your way, now you've got to remain.

Just as you were going, leaving me all at sea,
The clouds broke, they broke and oh what a break for me.

I can see the sun up high, though we're caught in a storm.
I can see where you and I could be cozy and warm.

Let the rain pitter patter
But it really doesn't matter

If the skies are gray.
Long as I can be with you, it's a lovely day.

Overall Meaning

The first verse of André Previn's song "Isn't This A Lovely Day" describes a scene of frightening weather with thunder and lightning. Despite this, the singer finds the day to be lovely. They believe that the weather is a turn, something that will keep them together. The singer reminds the listener that everything is okay and, in their opinion, it's a lovely day.

In the second verse, the song's narrator acknowledges that they and someone else are caught out in the rain. The person whom they address the song to was going on their way before the weather changed and now, they've got to remain. The singer is pleased about this change in circumstance because it gives them the opportunity to see the person. They describe how, even though they're stuck in a storm, they can still see the sun up high. The singer imagines how they could be cozy and warm with the other person despite the weather.

Overall, the song is about finding joy in unexpected circumstances. The singer sees the positive side of things even when the weather is frightening. The song is romantic, with the singer expressing their desire to be with someone they care about even during a storm.

Previn was a very popular jazz pianist in the late 50s. he never caught my ear, but listening to this, he did some interesting things, playing across bar lines
(long phases). to me, Andre Previn's great contribution to music was his breaking down the barriers to what was considered "serious" music and "popular."
he had a tv show where he invited musicians from all backgrounds. i remember a world-famous opera diva who he invited to sing "Love For Sale." she
nearly chocked to death--she couldn't catch her breath--handling this simple lyric. the point was, although a great opera singer, she was out of her element.
it's a miracle Previn rose to the heights he did in the classical world with his "shameful" background in jazz and composing film scores.

"The Columbia Girl" graced many of the label's albums of that period. It is amazing how much the company relied on this device in those years, having no relation to the music. One last device in moving product! Previn pooh-poohed his own jazz playing but the skill and sophistication bring pleasure to any musical person. He still played splendidly when I saw him at the Village Vanguard fifteen years ago.

Long, involved lines in his improvisations and in spots a style somewhat like Brubeck, but a lighter touch on the keys. Interesting. Mitchell and Capp are typically fine. Not a desert island album but absolutely worth a listen or two.

The Anglo version (a bit) like Frenchman Jaques Loussier. Previn was into the popular songs while Loussier was more into jazzy style (Bach mainly) classical music. But for me they displayed the same kind off “touch”. Pleasant enough background music for friends on a lazy Sunday afternoon gathering. Enjoy, G’day & Cheers!

What label recordings are on doesn't seem to be much of an issue anymore, outside of collectors' circles at any rate. Back in the day, however, having a contract with a major company like CBS was a big deal, worldwide distribution, promotion, airtime and generally high-grade production values. Often, this came at the price of limited artistic freedom, being nudged to pander to a rather conservative audience, less explorative, less potentially offensive, but to me, these albums you'd find in homes where the more adventurous, avantgarde jazz records were completely absent from an otherwise assorted collection of various genres, filed between Prado's mambos and Prokofiev's ballets, still exude a special charm. André Previn's Astaire tribute was such an album, widely available and put on many a home's turntable. Remember, these were the times when video cassettes, let alone DVDs and YouTube were still a thing of the distant future, and the great Astaire musicals of the 1930s were becoming a distant memory as well, and listening to the classy touch of these three gentlemen recreating the standards by Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern or the Gershwin Brothers once introduced by the one and only Fred Astaire, evoked many a sweet image. The finesse à la Previn consoled those who even back then were suffering from spells of cultural pessimism.

I couldn’t have described better, Henri. Cheers!

@@ronaldunkel2681 Previn payed good contribution to "Music To Listen To Barney Kessel By'' (late 50's): very well-made parlour-swing, like this one. Saw Loussier live in '68 (i was 17), with 10 other people in a small VARA-studiosetting, at Hilversum. He did his Bach-routine. Ciao, guys.
