What Child Is This?
Andrea Bocelli with Mary J. Blige Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What Child is this who, laid to rest

On Mary's lap, is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing,
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies He in such mean estate

Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce him through,
The Cross be borne for me, for you,
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.
Raise, raise, the song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby,

Joy, joy, for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!

Overall Meaning

The song "What Child is This" by Andrea Bocelli is a traditional Christmas carol that tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The song starts by posing the question of who is the child that is laying on Mary's lap while shepherds keep watch and angels sing sweet anthems. The answer is given that this is Christ the King who is guarded by the shepherds and praised by the angels. The song goes on to describe the humble beginnings of the Savior's life, why he is lying in such a lowly place instead of a grand palace. The reason is that he has come to plead for sinners and eventually, nails and a spear will pierce Him on the cross to bear the sins of the world. The final stanza of the song calls for all to come and worship this King of Kings, and offer gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. In the end, the song celebrates the joy and wonder of Christ's birth and the love He brings to the world.

Of Bocelli's numerous vocal collaborations, this IMO is his finest. Mary J matches him, pound for pound, tone for tone, and the generous Andrea listens carefully to where she's going, letting her SHINE.
