Firmin (Spoken): Monsieur Andre!
Andre (Spoken): Monsieur Firmin!

Firmin: Dear Andre, what a splendid party
Andre: The prologue to a bright new year
Firmin: Quite a night, I'm impressed
Andre: Well, one does one's best
Both: Here's to us
Andre: The toast of all the city
Firmin: What a pity that the Phantom can't be here!

Chorus:
Masquerade! Paper faces on parade
Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade! Every face a different shade
Masquerade! Look around, there's another mask behind you

Flash of mauve
Splash of puce
Fool and king
Ghoul and goose
Green and black
Queen and priest
Trace of rouge
Face of beast

Faces!
Take your turn, take a ride
On the merry-go-round
In an inhuman race
Eye of gold
Thigh of blue
True is false
Who is who?
Curl of lip
Swirl of gown
Ace of hearts
Face of clown

Faces!
Drink it in, drink it up
'Till you've drowned
In the light
In the sound
But who can name the face?

Masquerade! Grinning yellows, spinning reds
Masquerade! Take your fill, let the spectacle astound you
Masquerade! Burning glances, turning heads
Masquerade! Stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you
Masquerade! Seething shadows breathing lies
Masquerade! You can fool any friend who ever knew you
Masquerade! Leering satyrs, peering eyes
Masquerade! Run and hide, but a face will still pursue you

Madame Giry: What a night!
Firmin: What a crowd!
Andre: Makes you glad

Firmin: Makes you proud
All the crème
De la crème

Carlotta: Watching us, watching them
Meg: All our fears are in the past
Andre: Three months
Piangi: Of relief!
Carlotta: Of delight!
Andre: Of Elysian peace!
Firmin: And we can breathe at last
Carlotta: No more notes
Piangi: No more ghosts
Carlotta: Here's a health
Andre: Here's a toast
Firmin: To a prosperous year
Andre: To our friends who are here
Piangi and Carlotta: And may our splendour never fade!
Madame Giry: What a change!
Firmin/Andre: What a blessed release!
Madame Giry: And what a masquerade

Christine: Think of it

Chrisitne (Spoken):
A secret engagement
Look, your future bride
Just think of it

Raoul (Spoken):
Why is it secret? What have we to hide?
You promised me

Christine (Spoken):
No, Raoul, please don't, they'll see

Raoul (Spoken):
Well then let them see
It's an engagement, not a crime

Raoul: Christine, what are you afraid of?

Christine: Let's not argue
Raoul: Let's not argue
Chrstine: Please pretend
Raoul: I can only hope
Both: You will/I'll understand in time

Chorus:
Masquerade! Paper faces on padade
Masquerade! Hide your face so the world will never find you
Masquerade! Every face a different shade
Masquerade! Look around, there's another mask behind you
Masquerade! Buring glances, turning heads
Masquerade! Stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you

Masquerade! Grinnning yellows, Spinning reds
Masquerade! Take your fill, let the spectacle astound you

Overall Meaning

The song "Masquerade" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical "The Phantom of the Opera" is a lively and energetic ensemble number that takes place during a grand masquerade ball. The characters Firmin and Andre are celebrating the success of the party, toasting to themselves as the toast of the city. They express their disappointment that the Phantom, a mysterious and elusive figure, cannot be present at the event. The chorus then sings about the concept of masquerade, where everyone wears masks and hides their true identities. They describe the different faces and personas at the party, emphasizing the diversity and intrigue of the event. The song is filled with playful imagery of vibrant colors, contrasting characters, and the excitement of the masquerade.

The lyrics of "Masquerade" explore the themes of hiding one's true self and the allure of living behind a mask. It symbolizes the facade that people often put on in social gatherings and the idea that behind every mask, there is another layer of disguise. The chorus encourages the audience to immerse themselves in the spectacle of the masquerade, to revel in the illusion and the mysteriousness it offers. The song also serves as a contrast to the underlying tension and secrets within the story, particularly Christine and Raoul's secret engagement, which they fear will be discovered.

I Always wished I could go to a party like this.

@MyHeartHeardMusic

Is it me, or do I just like the fact that Erik was dressed as Red Death, and Raoul was dressed as a prince.... ...A prince is who Red Death kills in Poe's story.

@KingIshimaru

"Guys? Do you think we might wanna go easy on the masquerades while the masked psychotic is still living in the basement? I mean, every time there's an event he sort of walks right in and out again." "We haven't seen him in a while, man, lighten up!"

@WarriorOfMusic15

I think its because he's the only one that truly believes shes a good performer. Raoul never mentioned her singing career much did he? All the Phantom talks about is how wonderful she is

@sarah-annbird8044

i love how he sings softly, "fondest greeting to you all" while touching his sword

@taya89

I LOVE when the Phantom starts singing, the throb from the drums turns into the low and deep hum from the strings... pure genius.

@CrazeddancerMomiji

I've always loved how the conductor was up there keeping everyone on time. It's like they all got together and said "Hey, let's have this masquerade but we're an opera company so it's gotta be flashy! Rehearsals are 7-9 M-F, people! We gotta open with a choreographed number performed just for us!"

@tanukigalpa

What's terrible is that she also loves Raoul (as shown by the ENGAGEMENT RING AROUND HER NECK) but when one is out of the room she chooses the other, when the other is out of the room she chooses the one. It's very sad because Erik looks down and she's practically throwing the engagement and herself at him at the same time.

@PhantomhiveT

I love how Raoul just runs off at 1:45, like, "Um, okay, Red Death, I'm just gonna go, you good Christine, you good? Okay good, later." XD

@MissEdge102

"You belong to me" give me shivers every time (not to mention the really cool exit)
