You'll Find Your Way
Andrew Peterson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I look at you, boy
I can see the road that lies ahead
I can see the love and the sorrow

Bright fields of joy
Dark nights awake in a stormy bed
I want to go with you, but I can’t follow
So keep to the old roads
Keep to the old roads
And you’ll find your way

Your first kiss, your first crush
The first time you know you’re not enough
The first time there’s no one there to hold you

The first time you pack it all up
And drive alone across America
Please remember the words that I told you

Keep to the old roads
Keep to the old roads
And you’ll find your way
You’ll find your way

If love is what you’re looking for
The old roads lead to an open door
And you’ll find your way
You’ll find your way
Back home

And I know you'll be scared when you take up that cross
And I know it'll hurt, 'cause I know what it costs
And I love you so much and it's so hard to watch
But you're gonna grow up and you're gonna get lost
Just go back, go back

Go back, go back to the ancient paths
Lash your heart to the ancient mast
And hold on, boy, whatever you do
To the hope that's taken hold of you
And you'll find your way
You'll find your way
If love is what you’re looking for
The old roads lead to an open door
And you’ll find your way

You’ll find your way
Back home

A friend of mine was suicidal. This was his song.
He enlisted in the Marine corps with the intention of committing suicide on his 10 day leave after graduating boot camp.

In USMC boot camp, you don't get access to the outside world. No phone, nothing.
This was the last song he listened to the night before he shipped out.

After three months of training, he got sent home thanks to complications from the corona virus. He was 100 hours away from finishing.

Funny thing is, my friend is a tryhand, and only would let himself die on a moment of success, not failure, so with the .45 to his head, he said "Screw it" and kept fighting, even though his greatest dream was death.

Had he graduated, he'd be dead now.

Last I checked, he'll be homeless the 15th of January.
I hope he lets God teach him as much on this adventure as God taught him in the Marines on Parris island.

His faith is stronger than ever.

I listened to this song for the first time about 11 years ago when my son was born. He's now, well 11, and loves your work, brother. I'm really grateful for the truth, beauty, and goodness in your art. Praising God for you in 2024.

The amazing part is you're love for your family is so strong that you don't even realize that you're that boy who's fought the good fight, and is about to find your way back home to Christ. Go home. I'll see you there as well in a bit.

@therealsWa

From your words it seems you have that peace that surpasses human understanding. May God be with you continually and bless your paths and even heal you according to His will. In Jesus name, Amen.

Only Andrew Peterson can do a beautiful Christian video talking about the travails of becoming a man in today's society. Maybe' if we concentrated on raising our boys to show their emotions rather than bottle them up we would have fewer teenage boys in their early 20's lashing out at society. Thank you Andrew for singing about an issue which is not looked at thoroughly enough.
