Yeah for real.. I feel like the culture I grew up in, the locals, all told themselves to keep believing things were wonderful instead of allowing/accepting that they weren't always. It's as if so many people didn't allow themselves to process their emotions. They told themselves to feel fine or they were wrong.. I mean, who can be strong 100% of the time? I was 9 when my mom and dad separated. My dad died less than a year later. I shut the world out. Counseling didn't help and I was recommended to be institutionalized. It took everything to crawl out from that pain. I've married the most wonderful woman and raised 3 of the best children anyone could hope for. This song came so close to that pain. Amen baby! I used to listen to this in a Roca Jacks coffee house after panhandling for coffee change.. I was 14 and homeless in the middle of winter in Saskatchewan Canada.. very cold.. and I'd sit there and listen to this on repeat for hours crying quietly so nobody around me would ask me questions.. As a kid I used to fall asleep to the sounds of my parents screaming at each other. I knew it wasn't right but sort of just accepted it. It wasn't until I was about 20/21 when I was going on a nostalgia binge and listening to music from my childhood. This song came on. I just stared into the distance for the entire first verse, then it hit me. That fucking line.

I broke down. Just started sobbing. I would often come home after school or from a friends house to find my mom on the couch, obviously crying but hiding it, and she would just smile and act like everything was normal. I ran with 4 kids from an abusive marriage of 29 years. We were homeless without a penny and just the clothes on our back. Thank God for food stamps, child care assistance and housing! I attended nursing school and was able to provide for my children from that time on. My son, Greg, was 17 at the time. He joined the Navy and after he was released and came home, he got burned all over his body. That threw him into a mental illness. After that, he listened to your songs nonstop. Especially this one and Father of Mine. Your story is our story. During abuse, I wasn't allowed to help him. After abuse, we cried together whenever we listened to this song. He just had his 37th birthday and we listened to this again. Can't get it out of my head! It means so much! I get a lot of crap for my devotion to Everclear. I hear the "sellouts" the "overrated" and all that, but for me, Art Alexakis spoke for a generation of kids that had been lied to in a variety of ways, mainly by the people they trusted the most. I remember when they came to play for us while I was deployed to Afghanistan and they were hanging out in front of the stage for hours so that anyone could walk up to talk to them. You could tell that they sincerely wanted to meet every one of us. Very relatable and super nice.

Man, this song gets me every time.. I grew up with seeing domestic violence and my parents fighting so much I would shake at night in my bed hearing the screams of my own mother getting hit. As a kid you really don't get it or know why it's happening you just pray and hope everything will end up okay or ... wonderful as this man says... It effected how I did in school and my emotions I still to this day cant control... Its sad to know a lot of other people have went through the same things I did.. I still pray for any child that deals with domestic violence, divorce, even just arguing and having a dysfunctional family just know... you're not alone and I'm always here if anyone needs someone to vent too...

Yes thank you for sharing and letting people know they aren't alone, I grew up with a very abusive step father l, he went after my mother one time when I was 10 and I got in between them and he grabbed me up and choked e instead, so I knocked him over the head with a lava lamp, the closest thing to grab, and ran out of the house, the cops came and nothing happened he was in the military and was always buddy buddy with the cops. I wish I could say that was the only time that happened but it just got worse until I moved out at 17 and got into drugs like oxys and then morphine and then heroin, I'm 27 now and have been clean coming up 5 years, thanks for letting me vent and to everyone going through similar stuff or that had gone through things like this it can and will get better just stay strong and focus on what you can control, you can control your own life, concentrate on getting through school and away from the abuse and seek help there is help for people that go through things like this in the form of therapy or just venting on YouTube lol but things will get better and can be wonderful if you stay positive and work hard

What it means to me is that there are times when life really is not all that great, but you can still make the most of it - just do not give up. Case in point is one of my favorite shows, Jericho from 2006. The final episode of season 1 this song was playing in the background during a flashback. Very telling song for a very powerful episode. I agree with you Melissa and everyone - this song is special to me too as it helps me to remember about being happy and overcoming things like abuse and dysfunction.

This song kept me from killing myself when I was 14 and homeless in Saskatchewan Canada.. in the middle of winter when it was -30! and my mom and step dad wouldn't let me come home for a night to get out of the cold so I slept in a disney princess sleeping bag every night either in a parkade/car park or on a park bench being hassled by heroin junkies for the bench.. this song is the reason I'm alive.. someone felt the same as me.. this song is so relatable to me.. dont ever tell me anything could ever be wonderful ever again.. lots of love and happy thoughts to anyone reading my story..

This song came out the same year that my parents got divorced and was something I really bonded with. A million years later, it still reminds of the devastation I felt, but now I remember how I was able to overcome that profound loss.

The cathartic release of pain and then hope for better futures that this song and video provide are a monumental gift to all of us that were and are hurt or neglected. You might be the very first one in generations to stop the cycle of hurt, thus sparing not only your children but your descendants of the long climb out of the well just to get to a more normal place in life. As far as the whole 2012 Ancient Mayan Doomsday prophecy, it is actually very much set in stone as one of the greatest serendipities that is yet to conquer the whole world or "macrocosm" as we all know. There have been many other prophets from around the globe supporting this prophecy not just the ancient Mayans. All that being said apparently it was miscalculated according to the date. Supposedly December 21st 2012 was going to ignite the end of times bringing on catastrophic destructions such as natural earth disasters, etc. Not only that rumor has it that a giant dragon is supposed to arise out of the Ocean somewhere spitting fireballs all over the earth. All that being said , guess what ? It was a slight miscalculation with the year.... that's right, it did not happen in Dec 2012 but reverse that so they say and that means that it is really bound to happen this year.... 2021. Reverse the 12 it's obviously a 21. So that being said come the date of December 21st 2021 we are all going to be in for something extremely serious.

The end of the video when Art wipes away tears says it all. I’m 47 and the song hits made a hard every time. I had a shitty childhood as well and often wondered when I was a kid why everything in my life was so fucked up while everyone else seemed to have it so good. There was never a good answer for that the best advice I always got was don’t stress over what could’ve been appreciate what was move forward and make your life happen. And that’s exactly what I have done my son will never know the pain that I felt growing up just like the other Everclear song.

That was so surreal after being brought up in a house where fighting/not get along was just the norm. It did teach me reasoning and balanced argument at a young age though cos I always had to settle my parents' fights :/. Let's just hope that if/when any of us decide to have families they'll be nice peaceful ones cos we know what it's like for kids to grow up with yelling and negative shit all the time!

I was given a little blue round boom box around my twelfth birthday, it played cds cassettes and radio. I would sit and wait for this to be in the radio and eventually I got the cd. Mostly when I hear it I think of that little boom box and the way it smelled. I also listened to n sync no strings attached. My parents fought a lot and it bummed me out to no end. I hope Everclear knows how many lives they've touched. I enjoyed this song growing up as it resonated with me on a personal level. As I have grown older and now have a child of my own, it has an entirely different resonance.

While there were many reasons that I left my child's mother, not wanting my daughter growing up with physical and verbal abuse being normalized was chief among them. Witnessing abusive behavior was a daily event in my childhood home, so I felt compelled to spare my daughter that generational curse.

I can’t stop crying. I grew up poor in Los Angeles and I would hear my dad hit my mom. She would cry for help but I was 8 and scared and didn’t know what to do. My brother pulled his eyelashes out from the stress. My dad would even hit the dog when he tried to protect us. My mom named him Alex. He was a very good dog and would watch Sesame Street with me. I wish I could’ve fixed everything. I won’t ever understand someday. They were adults and should’ve treated us better.
