From beginning to end, this album is a joy and possibly the pinnacle of both artists' careers. Brady's version of 'Arthur McBride' in particular is, for many, the definitive version, ranking above Bob Dylan and the many other artists who have covered the tune.
Mary and the Soldier
Andy Irvine & Paul Brady Lyrics

And she roved out on a summer′s day for to view the soldier's parading
They march so bold and they look so gay
The colours fine and the bands did play
And it caused young Mary for to say
"I′ll wed you me gallant soldier"
And Mary to herself did say, at last they find the treasure
But oh how cruel my parents must be
To banish my darling so far from me
Well, I'll leave them all and I'll go with thee
Me bold and undaunted soldier
Oh Mary dear, your parents′ love I pray don′t be unruly
For when you're in a foreign land, believe me you′ll rue it surely
Perhaps in battle I might fall
From a shot from an angry cannonball
And you're so far from your daddy′s hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier
And I have 50 guineas in right gold, likewise a hearth that's burning
And I′d leave them all and I'd go with you me bold undaunted soldier
So don't say no but let me go
And I will face the daring foe
And we′ll march together, to and fro
And I′ll wed you, my gallant soldier
And when he saw her loyalty and Mary so true-hearted
He said, me darling, married
We'll be and nothing but death will part us
And when we′re in a foreign land
I'll guard you, darling, with my right hand
And hopes that God might stand a friend
With Mary and her gallant soldier
The lyrics of "Mary and the Soldier" tell the story of a young woman named Mary who falls in love with a soldier. The song opens with Mary observing the soldiers parading, commenting on their boldness and elegance. She is so captivated by one particular soldier that she decides she wants to marry him.
Mary contemplates the consequences of her decision, realizing that her parents will be cruel to banish her lover and herself. Despite this, she is determined to leave everything behind and join the soldier. The soldier, however, warns Mary about the hardships they may face in a foreign land, including the possibility of his death in battle. He tries to dissuade her by mentioning the distance from her home and family, but Mary remains resolute.
Mary reveals that she has a substantial sum of money and a hearth that is warm and inviting, but these material possessions mean nothing to her compared to her love for the soldier. She pleads with him to let her accompany him, promising that they will face any challenges together. The soldier, touched by her loyalty and devotion, declares that they will be married, and not even death will separate them. He assures Mary that he will protect her throughout their journey.
The song explores themes of love, loyalty, and the sacrifices people are willing to make for their loved ones. It captures the bravery and determination of both Mary and the soldier as they choose to face the unknown together.

To banish my true love away from me
Well I’ll leave them all and I’ll go with thee

“Oh Mary dear, your parents’ love
I pray don’t be unruly

Believe me you’ll rue it surely
Perhaps in battle I might fall
From a shot from an angry cannonball
And you so far from your daddy’s hall
Be advised by a gallant soldier.”
“Oh I have fifty guineas in bright gold,
Likewise a heart that’s bolder
And I’d leave them all and I’ll go with you
My bold undaunted soldier
So don’t say no but let me go
And I will face the daring foe
And we’ll march together to and fro
And I’ll wed you, my gallant soldier”

In hopes that God might stand a friend
To Mary and her gallant soldier”

At this point of his career I think Paul Brady was peerless - he just couldn' t put a foot wrong. His guitar playing is of course what hits you first, but then when you listen you realise how unobtrusively virtuosic his singing is.
@JoaoMoriera2
Such a wonderful and unmistakably Irish voice
@ajcc7171
Paul Brady was far from peerless...

Compare these naturally and hugely gifted musicians and singers to today's modern pop scene....as a Musician I'm very proud of Ireland's musical heritage...
@fromireland8663
Pop music is not the only form of music today. There are plenty of traditional musicians, probably more than ever.
There was also pop music in the 70s, most now forgotten.
