I'm Going To Change The World
Animals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't hear your knock upon my door
I don't have your lovin' anymore
Since you been gone I'm a-hurtin' inside
Well I want you baby by my side, Yeah

I'm cryin', I'm cryin'
Hear me cryin' baby
Hear me cryin'

Im lonely and blue baby every night
Yeah, you know you didn't treat me right
And now my tears begin to fall
Well I want you baby and that's all

I'm cryin', I'm cryin'
Hear me cryin' baby
Hear me cryin'

I don't hear your knock upon my door
I don't have your lovin' anymore
Since you been gone I'm hurtin' inside, yeah
Well I want you baby by my side

But I'm cryin', you know I'm cryin'
Hear me cryin' baby

Hear me crying
Hear me crying

Overall Meaning

In "I'm Gonna Change the World," The Animals' songwriter Eric Burdon sings about his pain and longing for a lost love. The lyrics describe a loneliness and desperation that is palpable in the singer's voice. The opening lines convey the sense of abandonment that comes with a breakup. The singer describes how he is no longer able to hear the sound of his lover's knock on his door and how he's lost the warmth of her love. As a result, he is left aching and hurt inside.

The song's chorus is where Burdon's desperation comes through most strongly, repeating the phrase "I'm cryin'" three times in succession. The repetition of this line amplifies the intensity of the emotion and we can feel the pain and sadness that Burdon is feeling. The final lines of the chorus, "Hear me cryin'," are a desperate plea to his lover to listen and to understand how much he is suffering without her.

In the final stanza, the singer reiterates the theme of longing and loss, describing how he's lonely and blue every night without his love. He reveals the bitterness he feels at being treated unfairly by his lover and how his tears flow easily without her. Despite this, he clings to the hope that she'll return to him and that they can be together again. The final chorus is a raw and powerful expression of the singer's emotions as he calls out to his lover through his tears.

Overall, "I'm Gonna Change the World" is a song that captures the universal experience of heartbreak and the emotions that come with it. The lyrics are simple but effective, and the simplicity of the melody allows the words to shine through. The Animals' recording of the song is a classic example of the British Invasion sound, and it remains a beloved track to this day.

There's one thing I've got to say
There's got to be some changes made
No more black or white
No more left or right
I'm gonna change the world, baby
I'm gonna change the world, yeah!
I'll switch the wrong to right (her on to right ?)
You can bet your life, baby, bet your life
Hold you far (cool your fire ?) and listen mister
Don't cause no trouble for my brother and sister
Why don't you look me in the face
Either that or leave my place
I'm gonna change the world, baby
I'm gonna change the world, waah yeah!
I'll switch the wrong to right (her on to right ?)
You can bet your life, baby, bet your life, my life yeah!
Forget about what your folks told you
Make up your mind just what you wanna do
Just accept people for what they are
Or this old world won't get very far
I'm gonna change the world, baby
I'm gonna change the world, oh yeah!
I'll switch the wrong to right (her on to right ?)
You can bet your life, bet your life
You can bet your life, just bet your life
Well (..?)
There's gotta be some changes made
I'm gonna change this world
I'm gonna change this world, waah yeah

Always an underrated track and one of my faves from this band. I was fascinated by the Hammond organ sound @1.54 - 2.22 as a teen. Really powerful

Thanks for watching! I think it's great that so many kids today are discovering the great bands of the 60's and 70's.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fantastic!!!!! I love The Animals, and this song especially. I turn fourteen in a little less than a month, and this song has as much relevance to my generation as it does to the one it's intended for.
