Fire In The Hole
Ann Beretta Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear the music and it hurts my head bad now
If you don't like it you can play your own hand now
It's not the music though, it's not a movement, it's a theory and now I'm gonna prove it
It's not politics I'm trying to annihilate
It's not the records that I'm trying to communicate
It's not the music though, it's not a movement, it's a theory and now I'm gonna prove it
FIRE IN THE HOLE-you better come clean
FIRE IN THE HOLE-in the city we sleep
FIRE IN THE HOLE-big brother beware

FIRE IN THE HOLE-all systems unfair

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ann Beretta's song Fire in the Hole describe a sense of frustration and anger directed towards society's unfair systems. The first verse begins with the singer feeling overwhelmed by music that is hurting their head. However, they quickly dismiss the idea that it is the music they are against. Instead, they claim that it is a theory they are trying to prove. This theory is not about politics or communication through music, but rather about exposing the unfairness in society. The chorus of the song reinforces this message by demanding that those in power come clean and warning them that there is a fire in the hole.

The second verse continues with the same theme, as the singer explicitly states that they are not trying to change the political system, but rather they are exposing the corrupt systems in place. The line "all systems unfair" is especially impactful in this context as it highlights the pervasiveness of the injustice. The use of the phrase "big brother beware" references George Orwell's novel 1984, in which an all-knowing government entity is constantly monitoring and controlling the actions of its citizens. In this song, the singer is warning that those in power will be held accountable for their actions.

Overall, the lyrics of Fire in the Hole are a call to action for listeners to recognize and confront the unjust systems in society. The song encourages individuals to speak up against corruption and support those fighting for justice.

Omigod. I haven't heard this in a decade. I was walking the mall (cause that was fun when you were 15, right?) and wandered into a music store, expecting to find nothing interesting. I asked the guy behind the counter what he'd buy if he were to leave with one record. This is what he handed me. Later I lent it to someone and never got it back. Man, I miss that CD. Thanks for posting.
