has developed a reputation as an intense performer and firebrand songwriter.
Her debut album ‘Poor Horse’ was voted into the Hotpress musicians' poll of Ireland's top
100 albums ever, while her second album We're Smiling has met with hearty critical acclaim
and a growing number of fresh converts.
Experimenting with unusual melodies, ideas and lyrics, Scott's musical armoury consists of a
range of left-field guitars, newfangled synths, detuned mandolas and some quirky ideas on how
to go about playing them.
A prolific writer and busy performer, Scott has shared the stage with artists as diverse as
Blondie and Fairport Convention, slogging hard on the live circuit between Ireland and the UK.
As a vocalist she is in frequent demand, during the past year alone singing on records for
Kila, David Kitt and Mark Geary, with whom she dueted for movies such as Loggerheads and Steel
City.
In 2005 her electronic collaboration for the Earsugar Jukebox Label under the guise of
Cracklebox received a gracious welcome in the UK garnering plays and praise on XFM, BBC1
and BBC 6.
Scott’s trump card however lies undoubtedly in her own work and in her instantly identifiable
voice. With this her second album, her own independent label, and the growing acclaim of fans
and peers alike, Scott continues to redefine and challenge herself as one of Ireland's most
original creative voices.
Love Is In Him
Ann Scott Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I′ve been waiting in the shadows
Swimming takes me with him
Love is in him
Women come here thinking
I've been living in the shadows
Hear things, I′ve been dreaming
Hatred is beginning
Love wells in him
Breaking waves beneath him
Take me swimming
The opening lines of Ann Scott's song "Love Is In Him" express a sense of longing and anticipation, as if the singer has been waiting for something or someone to come and take them away from their current situation. The line "take me Mary" seems to be addressed to a specific person, but it also conveys a general desire to be rescued or liberated from the shadows, which could represent darkness, isolation or obscurity.
The next few lines suggest that the singer finds solace and freedom in swimming, which is portrayed as a transcendental experience that merges the physical and emotional realms. The phrase "swimming takes me with him" implies a sense of surrender and unity with the water, and the repetition of "love is in him" emphasizes the connection between this experience and a deeper sense of love or spiritual awakening.
The second verse shifts the focus to the experiences of other women, who also seem to be living in the shadows and hearing disturbing things. The image of "killings in the shadows" adds a layer of danger and mystery to the song, and suggests that the singer's desire for escape is not just a matter of personal comfort, but also a survival instinct.
However, the chorus repeats the idea that despite all the darkness and violence in the world, love is still present and powerful, and can be found in the breaking waves beneath the singer as she swims. The song ends with a plea to be taken swimming, as if the only hope for salvation lies in this transcendent act of surrender and connection.
