After a chance meeting with an aspiring singer/songwriter, she managed to secure some studio time in Elton John's Rocket Studios, and, after hearing what she could do, she was subsequently picked up by Elton's management company Rocket Music. Anne-Marie released a demo in 2013 entitled Summer Girl, which drew some attention to the singer, most notably garnering a fan in Ed Sheeran. Despite the encouraging start to her solo career, things were put on hold to give her more time to develop as an artist.
Having guested on tracks by dubstep supergroup Magnetic Man, London-based garage duo Gorgon City, and progressive house trio Raized by Wolves, Anne-Marie caught the attention of Brit and MOBO award winners Rudimental. She was featured alongside Dizzee Rascal and Will Heard on two tracks from their second album, 2015's We the Generation, and spent two years touring with the band, playing some of the world's biggest stages and best-known festivals.
The summer of that year also saw the release of Anne-Marie's debut EP on Rudimental's then-new record label, Major Tom's. The aptly titled Karate EP featured three tracks and a Chloe Martini remix, and producers Josh Record and Two Inch Punch worked with her on the record. Both the lead single "Karate," a slick fusion of electro-grime and R&B, and the follow-up "Gemini," garnered some very positive reviews and led Anne-Marie to gigging as a solo artist. In early 2016, the single "Do It Right" reached the U.K. charts, and several months later "Alarm" hit the Top 40 in several charts around the world.
In 2017, Anne-Marie scored a hit single when she featured on Clean Bandit's multi-platinum "Rockabye" with Sean Paul. The song topped the charts across Europe and in Australia, breaking into the Top Ten in Canada and the U.S. She followed with the solo singles "Ciao Adios" and "Heavy," which both charted in the U.K. and Ireland. Both tracks appeared on her debut full-length, Speak Your Mind, which saw release in April 2018. The record also featured the track "Friends," written and recorded with American dance producer Marshmello.

When you're wakin', in your dreams
When you bite my tongue and make me scream (and make me scream)
See, I've got everything that you need
Ain't nobody gon' do it like me
We are burning at a high degree (at a high degree)
And you make me feel like it burns, and it hurts, uh
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
What is love?
Yeah, yeah, uh huh
I walk it, I talk it, I live it
What we do behind doors, it's our business
On my body, he givin' me kisses
I'm wet when I'm with him, I pop it like Adderall
Baby, dive in my beach and go swimmin'
Let's go deep 'cause you know there's no limits
Nothin' stronger than you when I'm sippin'
I'm still gonna finish, I'm drunk, I ain't had enough
One day you here, then you ghost
Tellin' me lies and it's killin' me slowly (yeah, yeah)
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me (yeah)
Don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me (yeah), no more (no more)
What is love?
(Uh huh, yeah, yeah)
What is love?
(Hey, yeah, yeah)
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more (yeah)
What is love?
Baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me, no more
What is love?
The lyrics of Anne-Marie's song "Baby Don't Hurt Me" express a complex mix of desire, passion, and vulnerability within a romantic relationship. The song delves into the idea of love and its various dimensions, highlighting both the pleasurable and painful aspects that come with it.
The first verse suggests a raw and intense connection between the two individuals involved. It emphasizes the duality of their relationship, encompassing both the passionate and intimate moments ("dirty and clean") as well as the subconscious and dream-like experiences ("when you're wakin', in your dreams"). The mention of biting the tongue and screaming adds a touch of physicality and intensity to their connection, further indicating the electrifying nature of their interaction. Overall, this verse asserts that the singer possesses everything their partner desires and that their love burns with an intensity that is unmatched.
The chorus, with its repetitive question of "What is love?", reflects the singer's confusion and uncertainty about the nature of their relationship. It conveys a sense of vulnerability, pleading with their partner not to hurt them anymore. This repetition suggests that they have experienced pain and disappointment in the past, causing them to question the essence and meaning of love itself. It is as if they are searching for assurance and understanding from their partner, desperately longing for a love that does not inflict further harm.
The second verse focuses on the sensual and intimate aspects of the relationship. It implies a strong physical attraction between the two, with references to kissing and a sense of sexual gratification. The lines about being wet and popping like Adderall suggest a heightened state of arousal and intensity when they are together. The singer is willing to dive deep into the relationship, highlighting their readiness to explore the emotional depths and potential of their connection.
The bridge reveals a poignant shift in the narrative, introducing a sense of pain and deception. The reference to the partner suddenly disappearing, leaving the singer feeling lied to and hurt, adds a layer of emotional turmoil to the song. It reflects the fragility of their love and the devastating impact of deceit. Despite the pain inflicted, the singer continues to question the concept of love, a testament to their resilience and desire to understand the truth behind their partner's actions.
Overall, "Baby Don't Hurt Me" offers a complex exploration of love, traversing its intense moments of pleasure and desire, alongside the vulnerability and pain that can accompany it. It reflects the yearning for a love that is both passionate and free from harm, while acknowledging the challenges and uncertainties embedded in romantic relationships.
